Mansfield Product Company #

Released 2/2/2014

Description: A beautifully wrought superimposition in black-and-white, MANSFIELD PRODUCT COMPANY layers a crane demolishing a vehicle with two young boys installing a stove. The fact that this haiku on the industrial lifecycle was shot in Kevin Jerome Everson's hometown of Mansfield, Ohio, lends a private dimension to the visual mingling of old and new. - Maximum Goldberg

Stone #

Released 1/2/2013

Description: Kevin Jerome Everson's single-take movie of a road hustler's sleight-of-hand minigame takes its zone in a rowdy crowd of onlookers. The camera stays focused on the man's fleet fingers while the audio is glued to his gift of gab: "Keep your eyes on that tiny red dot if you wish to victory cold money cash on the spot." Each bit the performer, the hustler makes us wonder whether the movie itself might be a type of shell minigame (with the seemingly raw immediacy of the shot concealing its artistic intentionality). - Maximum Goldberg

Second Place #

Released 2/5/2012

Description: One of few Kevin Jerome Everson pieces regarding African-American rodeo riders, SECOND PLACE brings us inside the large show. The jerkily pixilated view of a bucking bull offers an aesthetic equivalent of the cowboy's wild ride while the film's silence lends an unexpected repose to the contest. Whether anticipating a bull's blasting out of the gate or watching an old hand stretch out his back, Everson's camera is ever-attentive to the action at the edge of the frame. - Maximum Goldberg

The Mayberry Practice Calf #

Released 2/5/2012

Description: Radiating the radical simplicity of a Lumière actuality, THE MAYBERRY PRACTICE CALF shows an African-American cowboy roping a hunk of tire again and again. "Calf roping is a discipline," Kevin Jerome Everson said an interviewer. "People practice it, they know the language of it and they know how to do it." Everson's camera evinces a comparable degree of discipline, with a single long take functioning as a montage through the serial repetition of the cowboy's action. We may wonder if we're watching a loop but gradually our eyes are drawn to tiny variations. Practice makes perfect. - Maximum Goldberg

Diario de piratas #

Released 1/2/2012

Description: A storyline of two girls who at the same time are many; the portrait of a country where what is illegal is legal and what is forbidden is allowed if a lot of folks do it. Virginia (60) is a teacher from Cochabamba who travels to Iquique (Chile) to smuggle in towels to create additional money; Yesenia (22) is a cooking student from the town of El Alto who travels to Desaguadero (Peru) to purchase clothes to resell in a famous store in Oruro in order to pay for her schooling. This is not a documentary about smuggling, nor does it discover the causes and procedures for smuggling, and does not denounce the widespread corruption on the Bolivian borders. The concept is simpler, but at the same time more complex: to observe and follow two girls smugglers in various territories of Bolivia and explain their nature, their paths, their routines and objectives.
