Aside from his interest in wrestling for its own sake, Bilal has a possibility to victory a provincial wrestling contest and thereby bring home a considerable money award for his efforts -- and so his days are spent in training for the event. Meanwhile, his brother and sister-in-law and their daughter have come back home after living in Germany for 12 years and are finding the adjustment to their cultural roots a bumpy ride. The plot appears to be very simple. After the unexpected withdrawal of the initial candidate, Michel Dedieu is designated by his party to continue the presidential campaign. Dedieu, a reticent candidate, gotta face its adversary the famous Eric Carson during a televised debate. In order to improve Dedieu's photo in front of the media, he gathers a group of advisers in a residence in province. There he has only a several days to prepare himself for the coming debate. But behind this easy plot lies a very complicated and intriguing subject. Indeed Niels Arestrup has selected not a particularly simple topics for his first movie as a director. But compared to some American films on the subject, "The Candidate" succeeds in reflecting very well not only the French political mentality but the entire European as well. And the ups and downs of the central character, played brilliantly by the talented Yvan Attal, are revealed with such elegance that only an actor turned director should achieve. The movie itself is not your usual political drama packed with quick paced dialogues and explosive scenes. It now possesses the fine quality of a nice theatrical performance which makes it an even more enjoyable viewing!
