I just watched "La Salsa Cubana" with a group of fellow salsa dancers from my own community of dancers. Without a doubt, our group enjoyed the film and, I also believe, gained inspiration from it. Personally, I was struck by the similarities in how the featured dancers of the movie felt about salsa and how I think many members of our own community feel. There is a passion and dedication to strive for the excellent dance represented by the film's dancers as they prepare to compete on a tv program.Since the movie was made in Cuba, the scenery is amazing. The movie transports you directly to Cuba for a raw and intimate snapshot of the everyday life of the dancers. One has to admire the dedication they present to perfecting their dance moves. And of course, it was also unbelievable to see the amazing, and often intricate, dancing featured throughout the film. Our group followed the movie screening with a dance and I would highly suggest others bring their own dance communities together for a movie showing and social dance! Enjoy!
I enjoyed La Salsa Cubana (playing at the movie festival in Santa Barbara, CA). The movie makers passion for dancing is contagious and when blended with the authentic Cuban scenery, the movie is transporting and engaging. A several simultaneous storyline lines all brought together under the common love for dance makes this a nice "folk art" experience. Hot rainy afternoon road scenes, a metric montage of Havana signs and graphics, a constant observation of sunsets and sunrises bring no shortage of LIFE to the movie making. There is an on gong perception of pure believe the topics and the public who participated in the movie have to the filmmakers. It is this verisimilitude throughout the movie that gives is authenticity.
¡Esta película me priva! I loved learning about the social dance of Cuba: Casino de Rueda. I wish to learn! I love how you receive to know the dancers via the film, so much so that you begin to feel cariño for them. Sometimes the movie lingers on someone, and it is pure revelation and ecstasy! Along with a very private look into Havana and the dancers' lives, the movies builds up towards a rueda competition, giving it a nice storytelling arc, by building up suspense. The movie is also made richer by archival footage and actual TV footage from the dance show. Cinematography of dance and of Cuba is beautiful, sweaty, sublime!
