Description: It’s tempting, when praising Cassavetes’s films, to resort to generalizations about the director’s admirable intentions; descriptions like “original,” “raw,” and “human,” while certainly true, need to be expanded upon in order to receive at what makes Cassavetes’s work special, and the film’s interview topics sometimes fall into the trap of leaving things at the lvl of simplification. But for those fresh to the director’s films, there’s still some nice material here: the commentary from Cassavetes mainstays Ben Gazzara, Gena Rowlands, Al Ruban, Seymour Cassel, and (especially) Peter Falk is predictably engaging, and the chosen footage from formative early works like Shadows and Faces is revealing of a filmmaker in the process of discovering his voice.

Deckname Dennis #

Released 5/22/1997

Description: Dennis, an American personal eye, is sent to Germany to search out as much as possible about typical Germans and typically German behaviour. Disguised as a TV reporter he sets sail for Germany where we follow him interviewing a wide tons of people, from politicians and intellectuals to policemen, demonstrants and ordinary folks in the street. All this, however, is not what the movie is really about, for "Deckname Dennis" is now a satirical documentary about all those extremely odd people, groups and societies whose attitudes and behaviour are far too outrageous for anybody to take seriously. Therefore ALL the documentary bits are real, i.e. the folks really thought they were being interviewed by an American reporter, and so they gladly presented an insight into their beliefs, concepts and goals.

Krigsförbrytare Reviews:

Fine documentary about the spreading of Germany's Nazi rule thoughout Europe in WWII and the horrific violence that came with it. This movie basically documents the major trial of the Nazi fight criminals and the violent acts that they were accused of. There are some cute rough scenes of the folks in the Nazi concentration camps and many shots of dead corpses and body parts. Secrets of the Nazi Criminals is well narrated and well directed. I would suggest this film to anyone wanting to see the current horrifying reality behind the Nazis during their reign in WWII.

I first saw this movie around 1970 in my teens. I knew of course of the crimes of Nazi Germany but this movie really shocked me. It shows the terrible banality of terror and the unsensational style only increases the sense of nausea and dread.A pile of children's shoes, a mountain of spectacles, a hill of teeth smashed out to remove gold fillings, offers to the imagination than the explicit, but be warned, there is plenty of that too.It is impossible to be unmoved by this film. It is not a depressing movie though; it is more likely to fill you with the determination not to allow this ever happen again. The movie is also gratis of any tip of Zionism. It had a profound result on me and I soon become very involved in anti-fascist and anti-racist activity.
