The Fleischers had been producing sound cartoons since 1924 by this point, almost everytime efforts that would evolve into their Screen Songs when they did this very late Ko-Ko silent. In fact, they would create only half a dozen more and end the series after a dozen years.I suspect this had been planned for the last of the series a a sentimental effort. It does not even star Maximum in the role of Ko-Ko's artist, but Dave Fleischer -- who was also the model for Ko-Ko. Dave shows off a model and says Ko-Ko he got it for saving a city from a flood, and Ko-Ko winds up in a melodramatic case in which, with Fitz's connivance he saves a pretty blonde woman from a melodramatic captor. There are the usual surrealistic gags, including a very great one in which the villain throws knives at him into a wall, and Ko-Ko escapes by climbing them like a ladder.Ko-Ko was the most successful silent cartoon hero after Felix the Cat. Neither would survive the coming of sound, although the Fleischers would test him occasionally over the next decade. Their future lay with characters like Betty Boop and Popeye. Still, it's nice to see Ko-Ko go out with a fine effort like this.
Ko-Ko is a Dave Fleischer clown who is drawn on a huge piece of paper and then starts to interact with figures also drawn by Fleischer. In this one, Ko-Ko encounters a slinky blonde and is given the task of rescuing her. First, he gotta save her from drowning (not an simple task because she is not cooperative). Next, she is captured by a classic villain and he gotta receive through the door to support her. The fun in these pen and ink things is that the animation is really quite good. This is a silent movie and the silence supports to sell it.
Dave Fleischer was responsible for many gems. Ones that were amusing and charming, though over-cuteness did come through in some efforts and the stories were everytime cute thin, with appealing characters, outstanding melody and visuals that were inventive and with innovative animation techniques. Ko-Ko similarly was an everytime amiable hero to watch and among the better recurring characters in Fleischer's early work. Likewise, his series of Out of the Inkwell cartoons were among the greatest early efforts of Fleischer and silent cartoons in general. Fleischer may not be at his very finest and there are another cartoons of his that fit the word gem more. It is impossible to dislike 'Ko-Ko's Conquest', which place a smile on my face and is very simple to be charmed by.The storyline is cute formulaic and melodramatic, with not many surprises and an ending that can seen very early on, but now there is very tiny to criticise with 'Ko-Ko's' Conquest'.A lot is done very well to brilliantly however. The seamless blend of animation and live action and the delicious interplay are obvious nice things, but they're not the only ones.One expects the animation to be primitive and very weak quality, judging by that it's the 20s when animation techniques were not as many, as refined, as ambitious and in their infancy. While Fleischer became more refined and inventive soon certainly, the animation is surprisingly nice with some great visual wackiness and wit.It all goes at a bright and breezy pace, while there are a fair share of funny and suitably wild (not everytime imaginative, but everytime well timed and clever) moments and the romantic element is immensely sweet and charming without over-loading that it becomes sugary. Koko as ever is very likeable and amusing. The another characters help him very well. All in all, very well done and enjoyable. 8/10 Bethany Cox
