Svetlo proniká tmou #

Released 1/1/1931

Description: Zdenek Pešánek created the first public kinetic sculpture, for the power station in Prague. This short experimental movie focuses on a kinetic sculpture by Zdenek Pešánek. For a period of eight years it issued beams of light from the outside wall of a transformer station at Prague’s power utility before its destruction in 1939. Though genuine, these shots seem abstract to us. They are a rhythmically assembled ode to the light-creating devices and phenomena of electricity. Light arcs, coils, bulbs and different luminous elements help the alternation of positive and negative movie images, creating an impressive universe of light and shade. In the 1920s, Pešánek had obtained financial help for his work with electric kinetic light art. In the 1930s, he was the first sculptor to test neon lights. He built few kinetic light pianos, and published a ebook titled “Kinetismus” in 1941. —http://www.centerforvisualmusic.org

Bassae #

Released 1/1/1964

Description: ” I was interested by the fact that some old guy, after the Parthenon’s glamour, devoted himself in a much smaller temple, where there was no white marble, no nothing. All Greek temples are dedicated to Apollo etc, and this particular one was not dedicated to anyone and is in a zone where there never was a town nearby, in a type of wasteland, in a ditch. But, just by going up a bit –you are in the centre of Peloponissos- on a clear day, you can see the sea on both your left and right. I went back there, at least six, seven or eight times, as if I wanted to think or search myself. So, at the temple in Bassae, I made a short 10 minute movie and I was lucky enough to encounter two days of clouds and mist between the columns." —ecofilms.gr (Jean-Daniel Pollet, Tours d’horizons, Editions de l’?il 2005)

Histoire du soldat inconnu #

Released 1/1/1932

Description: For Histoire du soldat inconnu (Story of the Unknown Soldier) Storck watched newsreels for the entire of 1928, the year when 60 nations signed a pact outlawing war, and juxtaposed this heart-warming utopia with the signs of a forthcoming conflict (this was in 1932) – burgeoning nationalism, police brutality, excessive colonialism, bellicose politics. Ferocious editing sarcastically juxtaposes these nice intentions with the political farce of speeches and parades, all to the tune of factory chimneys collapsing in slow motion and the exhumed body of an “unknown soldier”. —cinematek.be

Killing Us Softly 4: Advertising's Image Of Women Reviews:

This is short documentary, only 45 minutes. It consists of Jean Kilbourne delivering a lecture with slides. She has done this many times. She is organised and clear. Each mission she makes she emphasises with true globe examples of adverts from magazines. With those example, there is no method anyone should contradict her.She is not shrill. She is not detached. She just just exudes common sense.I have not paid much attention to magazine adverts for about 30 years. I was shocked how blatantly pornographic and violent they have become.Companies create cash by making folks feel terrible about themselves. The catch is, this is driving some young girls to suicide. The film also discussed how pornography sometimes really screws up young males, to the mission they can't have sex with true humans. It also shows how makeup and photoshopping make models fully unlike the original models. Cindy Crawford tells she wishes she now looked like the image covers of her.

12/11/17. A nice documentary about how girls are defined by Advertising, and it's not a cute picture. By showing examples of print and TV advertising, Kilbourne shows how advertising pushes distorted and destructive ideals of femininity. The gender stereotypes are damaging and constantly demeans girls by projecting unrealistic and unhealthy perceptions of perfection, sexuality and beauty. The photos advance violence vs women, eating disorders, and addiction. Girls can never measure up, thus, the need to purchase their products. Worth catching.
