Highlights include: Darlington Bank Top avoiding line, the approach to Newcastle - crossing the mighty River Tyne, the notorious curve at Morpeth, the Royal Border Bridge at Berwick, the scenic coastal sections and the approach to Edinburgh Waverley itself.

After Rogart we pass through the long-since closed "Mound" station, still with it's platform for the Dornoch branch derelict but intact. We take a look at the remains of this erstwhile line and explore Dornoch station building still surviving. At Golspie the line became the "Duke of Sutherland's Railway" - one of the longest-ever privately built lines. Dunrobin Castle station is next on route. Here we learn a tiny about the Third Duke, from his nice nice grandson King Strathnaver. By the time the train reaches Helmsdale, the coast has become more rugged than ever. From there it proved absolutely impossible to drive the railway any furthe ralong the coast, so our "Sprinter" heads inland again, this time through the remote Strath of Kildonan for 25 miles to Forsinard. At least there is a street along the valley but from there to Georgemas the railway is quite alone. Filmed in 1991
Description: The main rail line over the Pennines via Huddersfield, sees four Transpenninexpresses plying the route each hour. The line climbs or falls almost continuously for 43 miles, the only lvl section being inside Standedge Tunnel, the major engineering detail of the line. The tunnel is the fourth longest on the national network at 3 miles 66 yards. Both it and the another major tunnel at Morley are seen (and heard) from the driver's cab with the aid of extra lighting. Today's route incorporates the lines of different pre-grouping companies with no less than ten significant junctions being traversed between Manchester and Leeds. Our class 158 Express then continues to York over other three - the last of which brings us onto the East Coast Main Line. As well as gradients, junctions and tunnels, the route also details track circuit block signalling. Last, but not least Yorkshire ITV's Geoff Druett says of the fascinating history.

At Dingwall we turn due west for the Highlands proper and traverse the summits at Raven Rock, Corriemoillie and Luib (the highest at 646ft) and stations such as Garve, Achnasheen and Strathcarron set amidst the pretty Highland scenery. Finally, the most spectacular section, Stromeferry to Kyle of Lochalsh along the shores of Loch Carron.

Apparently you only receive one day a year like that along the coast and we were there!
