Thax #

Released 8/17/2007

Description: When Thax was fourteen, a mystical vision said him that he would become a popular poet. By the time his beard went gray, he had performed thousands of times. Right before the band comes on, he recites a spontaneous poetry portrait to bless the stage. His paternal white beard, round belly, and thick glasses create him appear, perhaps, as a rock&roll holy man; a shaman from the pre-MTV era, when the cause of independent melody seemed to reach beyond the individual. Thax is growing tired of this image. The truth is nobody knows him. Like a baseball mascot removing his head to yell at the crowd, Thax says us the true story, whether or not we wish to hear it. The effect is stranger than fact. This movie examines the mysterious line that separates the underground from the mainstream, poetry from advertising, fantasy from prophecy, and success from celebrity. Like CRUMB, AMERICAN MOVIE, BURDEN OF DREAMS, and GREY GARDENS before it, THAX is a movie about the real cost of individuality.

Musician #

Released 5/19/2007

Description: Common sense tells you can't create a living in America testing avant-garde improvisational jazz. But Ken Vandermark does it anyway. Among musicians, Vandermark's work ethic is almost mythic. The Chicago reed user has released over 100 albums with nearly 40 ensembles, spends over eight months per year on the road, and lives each another waking moment composing, arranging, performing—and trying to discipline his two hyperactive canines. Though Vandermark was the recipient of a 1999 MacArthur genius grant, he still spends most of his life in smoky clubs and low-budget recording studios, hoping folks will plunk down hard-earned money to hear his wholly non-commercial music. Following the artful cinéma vérité style of the internationally acclaimed Sheriff (Work Series #1), Musician (Work Series #2) forgoes all interviews and voice-overs. It is a fly-on-the-wall time capsule that expertly captures each subtle sound and texture of this most American of art forms.

She Had Her Gun All Ready #

Released 1/1/1978

Description: Vivienne Dick's second movie has at its centre two of the 'subjects' of her first movie Guerillere Talks. Moving from a kitchen on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, the movie explores the dynamic between a complacent, almost catatonic Pat Zone and the demonic, aggressive Lydia Lunch, ending with a showdown at the rollercoaster on Coney Island. The movie utilises a linear narrative which is counterbalanced by an impressionistic view of Fresh York, lit by green fluorescent lights, with intermittent results added in-camera by Dick, including red filters and 'earthquakes'. The relationship between the two girls is ambiguous, they may represent elements of a single identity or the influence of a stronger will over a weaker character. It is the dynamic between these two unequal forces which propels the narrative.

Islam: Empire of Faith Reviews:

This documentary is an perfect introduction to those aspect of Islam which is covers. Unfortunately it is far too limited in scope but I understand why this is. With a fixed amount accessible for production costs the choice was either coverage in depth of a tiny part of the entire or a diluted coverage of a wider range of topics. It covers, at about 50 mins each, three aspects of the religion: Mohammed and the origins, the culture and the first Christian crusade, and the Ottoman empire. Every is given perfect coverage but it is very much a secular description rather than a religious one. For those folks who have tiny knowledge of Islam except for exposure to the western propaganda and the news of Islamic terrorist (a minute minority of the whole) this is an eye-opening documentary. Everyone could know about the rich cultural heritage which kept alive intellectual pursuits during the dark ages of western Europe. The sections on the Ottoman empire and the fall of Constantinople is well covered and provided some notification I was not familiar with. The photography is also excellent, showing some of the unbelievable architectural achievements of the early Muslims. I was not clear how much of the footage was of true life cases being recorded, how much was scripted for the production, or how much (if any) was extracted from another footage, but the blend effects in a well-balance, instructive video.Highly suggested for everyone, especially those whose exposure to Islam is only that which is portrayed by the USA media.

This is the first documentary that is fair to Islam and the Muslims. It is strongly suggested for anyone who lives in the West, particularly in the USA, and is skeptical of the propaganda that is constantly spread by the actual U.S. administration and certain special-interest think tanks and groups. If you are curious about Islam, and one of those who listen with a critical ear, this is a film for you to watch. It is a first rate production that describes the faith accurately and recounts history as it was. It is also well crafted, with a pretty cinematography, an perfect narration and a stunning display of art and architecture. Yes, it is missing a several things, but I don't trust anyone should have done a better job in trying to recount 1400 years of history in two hours.

This is a very nice documentary and shows the more fair photo of Islam not commonly seen in the West, of a religion that was flourished in culture, science, and art. It also shows its more violent parts in history. Nevertheless, I search that it ends all too abruptly and it fails to comment on any contemporary problems about Islam, which I guess would have made this documentary too long.If you are interested in Islam, search yourself a copy of this and watch as it is entertaining and informative.Especially at this time, it is important for Western audiences to learn more about Islam.
