Description: Ever since Goethe wrote his romantic novel The Sorrows of Young Werther, the name Werther has been synonymous with the mystery and even the romance of suicide among the young. In this thoughtful movie, Ismaël (Ismal Jole), a young thirteen-year old boy, is taken aback by the suicide of his greatest friend. Not only did he not have any concept that this dramatic act was a possibility, neither did his another friends. Perhaps it had something to do with his having an unrequited love for a pretty young neighbor, an attraction Ismaël also feels. Perhaps it had something to do with drugs, or a trouble with a universally disliked teacher. Throughout most of the film, the young survivors discuss their departed classmate.

Each Canadian needs to watch this film to learn of Canada's current history towards the Indigenous folks or as I would tell "The First People" of this country. Perhaps if folks watched this film they would receive a better understanding of what the government has done to generations of Canada's First People.
This film shows the brutal, harsh reality of life in a residential schools. not only do we receive a look at saul through out his life but we also see the hurt to another students along the way. sauls acting stayed consistent through out the film which was surprising considering it is all various actors. this movie gives you a look at something we wouldnt be able to understand in this depth if the movie werent made.i was emotional during this film beacause this film is real, this isnt a nightmare we can wake up from, this is real.
Based upon Richard Wagamese's novel of the same name, Indian Horse says an authentic, hopeful yet tear-jerking storyline that too many First Nations folks have gone through in Canada over the course of the past two centuries and beyond. The film says the storyline of Saul Indian Horse, an Ojibway man from Northwestern Ontario, whose family runs away from white boys who are forcing kids to go to residential schools where they gotta assimilate to European culture by any means necessary. Isolated in the wilderness, Saul's brother dies of a illness he caught at school and his parents, who already got assimilated to Christianity, decide to transport south to bury their child. Saul stays behind with his old grandmother who gets increasingly sick but his parents never return. His grandmother and Saul decide to join some family members before the harsh winter begins but the low grandmother dies on the journey. Saul gets discovered by two white boys who bring him to a residential school. He witnesses severe mental and physical abuse as First Nations kids aren't allowed to speak their mother tongues or live their traditional lifestyles. The only thing that makes Saul's desolate life more joyful is when he discovers ice hockey. He watches minigames on tv with a young priest who also builds a hockey rink and organizes competitive tournaments. Saul's skills receive discovered as a teenager and he moves south to the mining city Manitouwadge where he lives in a caring foster family and plays in a local hockey team. He later becomes a respected star user but also begins facing racism from fanatics and opponents. A scout then convinces the young adult to transport to Toronto where Saul plays for the farm squad of the Toronto Maple Leafs and has a promising career ahead of him. Saul however cracks under the increasing pressure of being targeted by racist fanatics and enemies on an almost everyday base and quits hockey to live the life of a nomad, accepting odd jobs between Thunder Bay and Sudbury. He develops a serious addiction to alcohol and is said by a doctor that his next binge drinking should lead to his death. Saul realizes he gotta face and overcome his demons of the past and search a zone named home to save his life. There are numerous elements that create this movie one of the greatest dramas in newest memory. First of all, the storyline that is said here is relevant as it exemplifies the cruel fate of many First Nations members. Secondly, the film is very emotional, meandering constantly between sadness and hope in all stages of the main character's life. Thirdly, the acting performances are absolutely nice as the main hero doesn't speak much but says us so much more about his inner demons through facial expressions. Fourthly, the settings are intriguing and shift from pretty isolated landscapes over isolated schools to mining cities and large cities. Fifthly, camera, lighting and sound techniques are calm, decent and precise which suits the slightly gloomy mood and slow pace of the film very well. Sixthly, it's interesting that the film introduces us to distinct characters and not just racist antagonists but also encouraging coaches, welcoming foster parents and driven squad mates. Seventhly, I liked that the film ended with a minor twist that makes us re-evaluate the scenes we have seen prior to that moment. Indian Horse certainly offers a lot of meal for thought.Indian Horse is a film that could be watched in history classes at Canadian high schools as it exemplifies the fate of many First Nations members in that country over the past two centuries and beyond. Indian Horse is authentic, emotional and intellectual all at once which makes it one of the greatest dramas in newest memory. Anyone who is interested in the history of the Fresh Globe could watch this film. Those who like ice hockey could also give it a try. Anyone intrigued by Canadian culture could also give it a shot. To hold it short, there isn't any reason to not watch this brilliant movie.
