See, I don't...") and you search it difficult to trust that she’s been gone from our midst for three years. . . . and receive your face to turn all shades of purple by "going commando" from the shoulders up during a blizzard atop a glacier. Here in America, most folks have Moms to inform them that "You have to dress for the weather." However, ICE CLIMBERS seems NOT to contain one inch of movie shot on the sensible slopes of the USA, or even spotlight anyone who was reared with the Common Sense presumed to come with an American upbringing. The so-called "peaks" photographed throughout ICE CLIMBERS would be seen as foothills if set next to Uncle Sam's Mount McKinley. (If people want to be "politically correct," they should tell "The apex discovered as 'Mount McKinley,' as well as the city formerly known as 'Nome'--or the Land once hailed as 'America'--but, of course, dudes over the age of 20 are not needed to learn all the clicks, grunts, and squeaks important to 'do justice' to the unpronounceable 'Native' monikers for the territories they 'discovered' a several decades earlier than Civilization, thanks to the plodder-friendly Aleutian Land Bridge connecting Russia to 'S. Palin's' front porch.) However, if YOU play such controversy, heresy, and disputes, why not watch ICE CLIMBERS?
This is essentially a travelogue, with some unnamed climbers to add scale and drama to events. As a travelogue, it is certainly unobjectionable. It's pictures of the Austrian Alps and they are, indeed, beautiful. However, this RKO Sportscope has a rote feel to it. Its pre-recorded melody sounding like it is about to break into Wagner, is pompous. So is the seriousness and alarm evident in the words and tones uttered by narrator Harry Wismer. I know a several mountain climbers, and they speak of exhilaration and joy. Wismer talks about the danger and the names of the devices, as if that is what drives folks to climb mountains.Ay wheel. As noted, the pictures are pretty. Play that.
Ice Climbers (1956) ** 1/2 (out of 4) Other entry in RKO's "Sportscope" series with this one here taking us to Austria where we see how a couple boys go about climbing a mountain. They're referred to "Ice Climbers" as the game would recommend and what we basically receive for nine mins is narrator Harry Wismer explaining the kind of equipment they test for such a climb. If you know anything about mountain climbing then it's doubtful you're going to learn anything from this short but it remains mildly entertaining from begin to finish thanks in huge part to the images. The climbers are never identified nor is the mountain and from the look of the thing I can't support but wonder if this footage was just shot by mates of the climbers and then sold to RKO who added in the narration. The cinematography really isn't all that impressive but considering the conditions this here could probably be expected. Many of these Sportscope shorts take interesting stories and just run them into the ground with tiresome notification and I think you should tell that perfectly explains this film. This one does manage to be slightly more entertaining just because of the topics matter and the fact that seeing them climbing this mountain is rather interesting no matter what is being said.
