Huhu 2014
Description: Lao Zha’s movie examines rural life in Haiyuan County, in Ningxia Province. Unlike the rapidly globalizing urban centres, here life remains largely unchanged for the Hui people, a Muslim ethnic group, whose diverse cultural roots incorporate Arabic and Persian influences that arose out of the Hui’s proximity to the Silk Road. In a remote Hui village, a tiny man called Huhu is growing up under the watchful eye of his grandparents, and, occasionally, his less-than-reliable mother. Amongst the chaos politics staggered on and an election of fresh leaders began. For the jaded folks whose lives had been changed so drastically, something required to be done. Vs this backdrop the Concept of The Greatest Party was born. It started out as a joke inside the head of Iceland's most cynical and most controversial comedian Jon Gnarr. The Concept was to poke fun at the establishment that had failed so spectacularly. Parody the arrogance of the 'left' 'right' parties and their false morality, by showing how ridiculous they all were. By Election Day something wonderful was about to happen.

Description: Singer-songwriter Paul Simon had been on the cutting-edge of pop melody throughout most of the 1960s and the '70s, first as half of the seminal folk-rock duo Simon & Garfunkel, and then as a well-received solo artist. But the rise of 1980s rock and fresh wave saw a decline in Simon's commercial success, and the singer responded by experimenting with various musical styles--most notably, globe beat--that culminated in his adventurous 1986 masterpiece GRACELAND. The album's fusion of American folk-rock songwriting and buoyant South African rhythms not only broke fresh ground in pop music, but became Simon's biggest-selling solo record. This episode of the CLASSIC ALBUMS series examines the making of Simon's groundbreaking work through interviews, behind-the-scenes footage, melody videos, and live performances of album tracks such as "Boy in the Bubble," "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes," "You Can Call Me Al," and "Under African Skies."

Rudi meticulously cuts strips of paper, divides them into frames and paints each picture. He has built a small-scale projector and moves the strip by hand in his own special rhythm, providing score, soundtrack and dialogue live – with an energy bordering on the obsessed. His favorites are horror movies: “Love stories are not my cup of tea!” he explains to the parish priest, his audience. The priest strives to lead the man to the path of faith and professionalism: he commissions a detail movie to be screened at Sunday mass. And Rudi delivers.

Released 1/1/2011

Description: The causes underlying the collapse of civilizations are usually traced to overuse of resources. As we write this, the globe is reeling from economic chaos, peak oil, climate change, environmental degradation, and political turmoil. Each day, the headlines re-hash stories of scandal and betrayal of the public trust. We don't have to create outraged demands for the end of the actual global system - it seems to be coming apart already. But acts of courage, compassion and altruism abound, even in the most damaged places. By documenting the resilience of the folks hit hardest by fight and repression, and the heroism of those coming forward to confront the crisis head-on, END:CIV illuminates a method out of this all-consuming madness and into a saner future. Backed by Jensen's narrative, the movie calls on us to act as if we truly love this land. The movie trips along at a brisk pace, using music... Written by Franklin Lopez
