Description: With the original intention of empowering a citizenry's ability to defend themselves vs a corrupt or tyrannical government, the idea today may seem farfetched or the makings of a Hollywood blockbuster. However, it has happened throughout U.S. history. And long before gun control was positioned as a "common sense measure" to combat violence, it was used as a means to oppress certain minority groups. Presently, the growing trend in gun control favors the wealthy and privileged, who leverage their connections to ensure their Second Amendment rights and safety, while those of lesser means struggle. Informative and emotionally charged, "Assaulted: Civil Rights Under Fire" is an eye-opening look at the genesis of the Second Amendment to the Constitution, leading the audience to rethink the problems surrounding gun control, and the result on civil rights and liberty. After all, what you don't know can slay you.

A Girl and a Gun #

Released 7/3/2013

Description: A Woman and A Gun shows the female perspective on an object whose history is deeply bound to boys and masculinity. The classic Hollywood portrayals of pistol packin' mamas, tomboy sharp shooters, sexually twisted femme fatales, and high-heeled, cold-blooded killers are caricatures. In truth, the typical girl who hangs out at rifle ranges and keeps ammo in her purse is the girl-next-door, the single mom, a difficult working sister or aunt. Maybe she's a realist or has learned tough lessons from life; either way, she cares about her private security and may even search salvation, comfort or something satisfying in possessing a gun. In a word, she is empowered. Breaking through the caricatures, A Woman and a Gun reveals America's diverse and far-ranging female gun community. It depicts how this community is portrayed by the media and targeted by the gun industry; and shows, through private stories, how guns change women's lives.

Holly Near: Singing for Our Lives Reviews:

This documentary film, recently broadcast on PBS's "American Masters" series, is a brilliant example of how filmmakers, in this situation Jim Brown who made the classic "Wasn't That a Time" about the Weavers folk group, can shed light on history and folks overlooked by the mainstream. I had known of Holly Near over the decades only in passing but this film cements her central zone in newest American history as both musical artist and activist. After a single viewing I'm convinced she is a major user in crucial movements such as the Peace Movement, Women's Rights, LGBT and even indie music. Last genre showed her trailblazing record company Redwood Records that serves as a model for self-distribution.With luminaries like Gloria Steinem and Jane Fonda interviewed to properly zone Near's role in so much progressive work, it is ultimately Holly's winning personality, nice empathy and terrific musical ability that comes through loud and clear here.
