Description: It is a tragedy, set among low-lifes on the outskirts of Budapest. Dramatic Exchange describes it as "Widely considered to be the most necessary Hungarian enjoy of the last 20 years". The odd game of the enjoy refers in the first instance to the chicken heads that an old girl feeds to her cat. However, it can also be taken to refer more broadly to the obtuse behaviour of the main characters in the play. The enjoy is an odd mixture of pathos and nihilism, written vs the bleak background of Stalinist totalitarianism from which Hungary was emerging. As with much modern drama, there is no character in the play. The only noble behaviour that one can search belongs to one of the characters in the past, when he was a child, but he is no longer as he was. The tip that what once existed might be achieved again is the only faint ray of hope in a very bleak view of the human condition.

Description: The game of this Italian melodrama translates to Pact with the Devil. However, His Satanic Majesty does not appear in the film. Rather, this expensively produced period piece is more along the lines of Romeo and Juliet, with young love threatened by warring families. In his first Italian film, Hollywood veteran Eduardo Cianelli goes through his usual villainous paces as the scheming father of the male lead (Jacques Francois). The most fascinating performance is rendered by Umberto Spadaro, as the village idiot, or is he? Patto col Diavolo makes the most of the visual dynamics of Italy's mountainous Calabrian region.

Description: Any film that begins Jewish entertainer George Jessel as an Italian accordionist called Luigi can't be all bad. In love with the pretty Margharita (Lila Lee), Luigi lands a job in the melody shop owned by the girl's uncle. Ultimately, however, our character does the Pagliacci act when Margharita evinces a preference for handsome Pasquale (David Rollins).
