Борис Годунов #

Released 5/1/1986

Description: Praised for its fine photography and production design if not its narrative, Sergei Bondarchuk directed this adaptation of the tale by Alexander Pushkin. Boris Godunov came to the Czarist throne at the end of the 16th century, after the original heir to Ivan the Poor had died. At first, things went well for Godunov (played by Bondarchuk), but when the Russian folks began to trust he had killed Ivan the Terrible's son in order to gain the throne, an alliance sprang up vs the fresh Czar. Happenings continued to spin out of control as a young monk was presented as the son Godunov had supposedly killed. Actually he was openly accused of failing an assassination attempt, which seems to be even worse than succeeding. In addition to these woes, Boris Godunov began to suffer serious health problems. So much for the joys of kingship.

Quilombo #

Released 6/3/1984

Description: Quilombo dos Palmares was a real-life democratic society, created in Brazil in the 17th century. The colony becomes a secure harbor for another outcasts of the world, including Indians and Jews. Ganga Zumba (Toni Tornado) becomes president of Quilombo, the first freely elected leader in the Western Hemisphere. Naturally, the ruling Portuguese wish to subjugate Zumba and his followers, but the Quilombians are ready for their would-be oppressors. The end of this Brave Fresh Globe is not pleasant, but the followers of Zumba and his ideals take to the hills, where they honor his memory to this day. Writer/director Carlos Diegues takes each accessible occasion to compare the rise and fall of Quilombo with the state of affairs in modern-day Brazil.

Harem Reviews:

I wasn't expecting anything when I rented this, except maybe nice performances of both the lead actors - Ben Kingsley and Nastassja Kinski, both of whom I think are very nice at what they do. I expected it to be avant-garde (which as far as I know usually implies a rather complicated or stretchy film that might be strenuous to watch at parts), and it turned out to be just that - tiny dialog to create the photos work, and some scenes the film should have done very well without. What separates this from a GOOD avant garde is the notorious lack of any meaningful plot, or concept that the director wishes to convey. And if there's something I can't stand it's an old-as-the-hills storyline cosily cloaked in a directors' slightly demented vision. "susceptive foreigner falls in love with a boy from foreign culture, and learns to love and understand this foreign culture after initial struggles". That's it. Not more and not less. This film may be slightly less kitchy than another films with the same theme, but the price for this is high - many unlimited and dragging scenes portraying things previously shown enough times. That just makes you wish to grab your remote and fast-forward a tiny bit. However, this film does have some rather original "twists" to the plot, and it's nice enough to hold you watching throughout. It's also straight-forward enough to appeal to folks who usually avoid avant garde and "the artsy". No prior knowledge of the theme is required before watching this movie, which is a bliss.

The video cover portrayed womens breasts and instantly I thought it was going to be a trashy film, this was not so! It was a well executed hero driven movie concentrating on lifestyle, love and changing lifestyles. Very tiny dialogue which was wonderful to watch and when it was utilised, it was very powerful. A quiet beginning, but unfolded later to be quiet intriguing. I found the script to be masterly. In addition to perfect performances by Ben Kingsley and Nastasha Kinsky. Definitely worth watching if you like this category and plot line. A tiny more scenery wouldn't go astray, but overall - brilliant - it wasn't a trashy boob harem film at all (sorry to disappoint you fellas)

An American woman, Nastassja Kinski, is kidnapped off the roads of Fresh York and ends up in a harem. This film is not to be confused with Rudolph Valentino's "The Sheik" essentially because "Harem" is dead once the scenery moves into an unknown Arabian desert where the shifting sands seem to have caused time to nearly stop. Terrible Ben Kingsley plays a lifeless role that is in marked contrast to the more meaty role that Nastassja has been given. Without Nastassja, there is no film and even she cannot save this very slow, dull, when-is-it-going-to-end movie. Except for Nastassja, the picture lacks life. The script is DOA and one wonders how these sorts of films ever see the light of day. At least it is comforting to know that no amount of cash in the globe will purchase off Nastassja's hero - American girls can be feisty and independent even if they have to rely upon their feminine wiles. "Harem" is a film that is so terrible that one cannot forget it.
