As his day progresses, he undergoes a mild existential crisis, pondering what his seemingly pointless job of scaring surface folks is really for. He is a member of the Bogey society, which is very related to British society, but Bogeymen play things which humans (called Drycleaners because of their contrasting environmental preferences) would not be comfortable around; for example darkness, damp, cold and over-ripe food. The ebook depicts the mundane features of Bogey life in loving detail, with definitions of Bogey slang and numerous annotations concerning the myths, pets, hobbies, literature, clothing and meal of the Bogeys. Much of the humour derives from word play. For example, Bogeymen are shown to play eating and sharing flies in a related method to human cigarettes; one brand of fly is the "strong French Gallwasp", a pun on the cigarette Gauloises.
Description: In our terrestrial view of things, the speed of light seems incredibly fast. But as later as you view it vs the vast distances of the universe, it's unfortunately very slow. This animation illustrates, in realtime, the adventure of a photon of light emitted from the surface of the sun and traveling across a portion of the solar system, from a human perspective. Liberties were taken with certain things like the alignment of planets and asteroids, as well as ignoring the laws of relativity concerning what a photon now "sees" or how time is experienced at the speed of light, but overall the size and distances of all the objects were kept as accurate as possible. It was also decided to end the animation just past Jupiter to hold the running length below an hour.

Description: More than just a landmark in superhero animation, Maximum Fleischer's Superman shorts were no less than the foundation for so many shows that succeeded it. Testing in theaters in 1941-42, only a several years after the Boy of Steel made his debut in Action Comics, these 17 exciting movies were produced by Fleischer and made popular the phrase "This looks like a job for Superman!" At 10 minutes, every movie had just enough time to run the opening credits, establish the threat, allow Lois Lane create a headstrong rush into peril, and let Clark Kent to change to his alter ego and save the day. The movies present a remarkably dynamic and atmospheric storytelling style that enables them to keep up for modern viewers. At first the movies followed a science fiction-fantasy theme, but not unexpectedly for that time later focused on wartime concerns.

This short movie is included in the DVD "Shorts!: Vol. 1" and is one of the better ones in this compilation. Unfortunately, it's among the weakest of the shorts on this disk. The largest reason I tell this is that the animation is only passable and the storyline itself is weird--and not in a particularly nice way.The movie starts in what looks like Japan, though the narration is in Japanese-accented English. The lady explains that lately she has not been able to sleep and then starts wondering about how fishes can manage to never sleep (scientifically, this isn't quite accurate, but this isn't a marine biology blog, so I'll hold this to myself). Then, as she things about this, you see fish being caught and processed on an assembly line.Where the movie when next didn't particularly impress me--it just seemed bizarre and pointless. However, so as not to spoil the film, I'll tell nothing more. I just didn't feel there was enough payoff for the film--an odd idea but one that didn't quite hit the mark.
