Description: Byzance uses a text by Stefan Zweig to describe the Ottoman conquest of the town in 1453. Before he turned to detail filmmaking in 1968 with Naked Childhood, Pialat worked on a series of short films, many of them financed by French television. Byzance is one of Pialat’s six Turkish shorts.
Description: All of Pialat's Turkish movies are uniquely interested in the country — especially Istanbul — as it was, not just as it is at the precise moment that Pialat is filming it. History informs these movies in a large way, with the voiceover narration (which incorporates excerpts from different authors) introducing tension between the photos of the modern-day town and the descriptions of incidents from its long and rich history. Istanbul is probably the most conventional documentary of Pialat's Turkish series, providing a general profile of the titular city, its various neighborhoods, and the various cultures and methods of living that coexist within its sprawling borders. As the another movies in the series also suggest, Pialat sees Turkey, and Istanbul in particular, as a junction mission between Europe and the East, between the old and the new, between history and modernity.

This Canadian Navy short documentary about the Navy's motorized torpedo boats is a competently produced affair, shot with hand-held cameras for extreme moving point-of-view shots. This works well to increase the tension, until we shift to war footage -- mostly shots of flares going off in a night sky.On its own it is not particularly remarkable, although John Ford seems to have lifted some of the war shots for his 1945 detail THEY WERE EXPENDABLE. Still, the viewer may be interested when he realizes that the movie is narrated by Lorne Greene and that it was directed by Sidney Newman, who soon moved to Nice Britain and was responsible for the creation of two perennials of the tiny screen: "The Avengers" and "Doctor Who."
