Description: Globe Fight II has long provided fodder for European filmmakers and East German director Konrad Wolf is no exception. In this uneven though at times compelling drama, he examines the conflict involved in a forbidden love. While the fight is in full swing, a young German solder is assigned to a unit in charge of deporting Jews to the death camps. He falls in love with one of the Jewish girls being deported, an impossible case which he knows has no simple solution, if any. Alternately philosophical and at the end, at least, quite powerful, this movie may still be too downbeat for most general audiences.
Description: Rumania's entry in the 1958 Cannes Movie Festival was the excessively melodramatic Ciulinii Barganului. The game translates as Fools of Baragan, in reference to a band of beleaguered feudal Rumanian peasants. But these are no fools: instead, they are fearless freedom fighters, organizing a brave (though foredoomed) revolt vs the tyranny of the landowners. The parallels drawn between the folks of Baragun and Russia's revolutionary leaders are all but impossible to miss. It would have been nice, however, if the storyline had not been said in such a heavy-handed, spell-it-all-out fashion.
Description: The game of this Italian slice-of-life drama translates to Young Husbands. The husbands in question rather casually enter into marriage, never intending real fidelity to their spouses. When they realize that they're committed for life, our immature heroes return to their home city for one last fling. In the course of their final hours of bachelorhood, they come to the sobering conclusion that their carefree youth is not only past, it's already long past. Somewhat reminiscent of Fellini's I Vitelloni, Giovani Mariti boasts perfect performances from all concerned.
Description: A poignant overview of how short life can be, this interesting drama from Czech director Vojetch Jasny is divided into four separate segments. When the cash is finally recovered, our heroine does the "right thing" with her windfall, leaving her mercenary family empty-handed. Throughout the film, Hortense's dilemma is likened to a government dam project not far from her home; as the bridge grows in size, so too does Hortense's resolve to rise above the nastiness all around her.
Description: As far as can be determined, Goha was Tunisia's first entry in the Cannes Movie Festival. Omar Sharif stars as a naïve young boy who is taken for granted by mates and family. Tiny do they know that he has more intelligence, tenacity and imagination than all of them place together. The storyline takes an unexpectedly dramatic turn when the boy falls in love with the young wife of his village's elderly "wise man". Based on an ancient Tunisian folk tale, Goha boasts impressive production values and sure-handed direction (by Jacques Baratier).

Description: This easy-to-take Hungarian drama is also known as Two Wishes. The prinicipal characters are a pair of juvenile delinquents, who may still be redeemable. The sullen duo is befriended by a kindly police inspector, who takes it upon himself to straighten out the boys. What follows cannot be termed surprsingly or innovative, though it is immensely satisfying. Of interest is the fact that a Communist-bloc movie would admit to a delinquency trouble in the so-called Worker's Paradise. Ket Vallomas was the Hungarian entry in the 1957 Cannes Movie Festival.
Description: This Norwegian documentary was released in another countries as Lapland Calendar. In Disneyesque fashion, the movie features the day-to-day existence of the Norwegian Laplanders. The "story" concentrates on the annual odyssey wherein the Lapland reindeer are shepherded to snow-free grazing lands. Not surprisingly, director Per Host is more fascinated with the reindeer than with the human characters -- and, by extension, so is the audience. The movie was lensed in economical Eastmancolor, meaning that most existing prints have washed out over the past 40 years.

After nearly two hours of unrelieved misery, Rose finally finds happiness in the arms of a longtime admirer (where has he been for the past 12 reels?) Description: Produced on a grand scale, the Mexican Talpa relates the easy storyline of two brothers. The older of the siblings, Tanilo (Victor Manuel Mendoza) is a well-to-do family man; the other, Estaban (Jamie Fernandez), is one step above a wastrel. When Tanilo is felled by illness, Estaban is forced to take over the family's blacksmith business. He also inaugurates a romance with Tanilo's pretty young wife Juana (Lilia Prado). Punishment is eventually doled out in a manner which suggests that God Himself is exacting retribution on the adulterous couple. Originally released at 87 minutes, Talpa was pared down to 73 mins for American consumption.
Description: The main focus is on the 5 member band of a tiny circus as it runs into issues while touring rural Japan. It also pays lots of attention to the two daughters of the aging and irascible ringmaster-circus owner. The high points are the sound (and score) and cinematography featuring a lot of vertiginous panning (appropriate - as high wire trapeze artists are also an necessary element in the film). A fascinating side-light on 30s Japan.
Description: Judging by the number of times it has shown up on Spanish-language cable TV, La escondida is one of the most famous and greatest beloved of the Maria Felix vehicles. The star runs the emotional gamut as Gabriela, who rises from the depths of poverty to the heights of Mexican society as a much-sought-after courtesan. Eventually, however, Gabriela proves that she is still real to her peasant heritage by casting her lot with the rebels in the 1916 Mexican civil war. Pedro Armendariz co-stars as Felipe, the charismatic rebel leader who wins Gabriela's heart - and inadvertently causes her downfall. La escondida is stunningly photographed by the late, nice Gabriel Figueroa.
