Exécution de Jeanne d'Arc Reviews:

Upon viewing this movie one is reminded of the many early movies of Georges Melies. The movie is hand tinted in the same fashion which many of Melies movies are colored, with a storyline line in the same vane. This is perhaps why this ver is often confused with Melies' lost movie about Joan of Arc.If coupled with a nice sound track, this movie is quite effective, and moving. Even one hundred and twelve years later, I was still saddened by Joan's trial and execution. With the support of the ahead of its time effects, and unbelievable performances by the actors (especially the unknown actress who plays, Joan) the movie is emotionally powerful. Personally, I don't understand why this movie isn't discussed by fanatics of cinemas' oldest films.Visually the movie is very appealing. As I mentioned earlier, the movie is hand-tinted quite wonderfully. in fact, Who ever colourful this film, rather it be the director (Georges Hetot) or someone in a production house, they did a top notch job, even better than some of Melies colourful films. The ending of the movie is the best, I won't crash it entirely, however it is bittersweet. I can't support but think that a tiny bit of the ending is missing, because it seem to end quite suddenly before the fade out is complete. It makes me think that, Joan was going to do a several more motions before the movie ended. Unfortunately we may never know. This movie needs to gather more acclaim then it has. I hope that later folks can look past the fact that this is not a Melies film, and play this 1898 classic for the nice movie that this is. Highly Recommended.

The director of this short topics was Georges Hatot, who specialized, at this point, in taking popular historical paintings (like David's DEATH OF MARAT) and turning them into films. The couple of surviving examples were very elaborately colourful and you may, if you like, view this one on Youtube. For a couple of decades, there was a war between troops of movie dynamics: was it the individual shot, in which situation movie should be viewed as a sort of moving tableaux vivante, or was it the scene, in which situation it should be viewed as a relative of the theatrical drama? Eventually the latter won, although the tableaux vivante shot has remained as a subtext, both in efforts like American GANGSTER, in which Norman Rockwell's popular Thanksgiving picture was reimagined with a Black family and given some excitement by means of a moving camera; and in few newest movie versions of comics and graphic novels in which the observant viewer can discern panels from the original work, which tend to hang on the screen. However, a moving camera and the shorter length of an average shot has made this sort of work an evolutionary dead end.
