La danza del hipocampo #

Released 3/23/2014

Description: Memory mechanisms are mysterious: we only see the stories we select in order to construct our own reality. Each tag is a message in time, the invocation of an absence. To travel in the memory is to walk in time, zigzagging, a long street permeated by a dark, indecipherable logic… if we should select seven moments to sum up our whole life, which ones would they be? The Dance of the Memory is a documentary-essay that tutorials us in that autobiographical search, where photo and memory intertwine. It mixes archive material with an aesthetic and subjective tone.

Ang Ninanais #

Released 7/12/2010

Description: Sarah is a debt collector who lives among the inhabitants of the village of Guimbal on the island of Panay. She wants to search the young boy who appeared to her in a dream and goes to the island of Negros. Here, as she interacts with the inhabitants, Sarah continues her search, gathering memories of life and war, dreams, myths, legends, songs and stories that she takes part in and at times revolve around her. She is the daughter of an ancient mermaid, a revolutionary, a primordial element, a virgin who was kidnapped and hidden away from the sunlight. “The movie is a retelling of fragments of the American occupation. Dialogue, shot in the Hiligaynon language, is not translated but used as a tonal tutorial and a software for narration. Using unscripted scenes shot where the main hero was asked to merely interact with the villagers, I discard dialogue and draw meaning from peoples’ faces, voices, and actions, weaving an entirely various storyline through the test of subtitles and inter-titles.”

Description: The French poet and philosopher Geneviève Clancy (1937-2005) does not distinguish her writings (radical in terms of both sense and style) from political action vs all forms of oppression and exclusion. Using archival material and the accounts of those who shared with her the necessity to respond, through their creations and activities, to contemporary history's challenges, the movie tries to reflect the movement of a thought that dissolves the distance between prose and poetry, between private and collective life. It depicts a network of folks united in their refusal to agree the compromises needed in our times, who reveal with their work the chance of other reality

Description: This documentary aims to register this unknown side of James Joyce: His Greek Notebooks. Trieste. Bloomsday, 2013. Dance in slow motion, accompanied by text. By deconstructing the body, we turn it into a memory: of the body, of life, of texts. The biographical references to Joyce and Mando Aravantinou, combined with the diagonal slicing of the image, cancel the realism of the landscape, including that of the Narrator’s space/study. As a culmination, Joyce’s letter “A request for a loan in Greek” functions as a timely denunciation. Different routes through cities, such as Trieste, London, Fresh York, and Athens; languages such as Greek and English. In addition to the primal myth of Ulysses, there is other issue: Greek is “the language of the topics of Ulysses”

Down to Earth Reviews:

They create it look in the trailer that this is the storyline of a family traveling the Earth. It's nothing like that though. Instead it's the storyline of medicine-men and girls saying us how to live.... The adventure is just a tiny part of the film. Dutch subtitles were correct but not complete. Rolf Winter's and his wife's voices are not the greatest narrating voice... Perfect pictures and melody though. The message of the film is nice as well... It would be great to see a part two of the film where they explain more about the trip. How did they manage to stay away for so long? Did they stay with the Indians for 4 years and then travel for 1? Or did they travel for 5 years after? What are they doing now? Are they living the life as they say us to live it or have they gone back to Western "civilisation"? Too many questions after seeing this.

A view days ago this film left me speechless, wandering through the town with a strange almost alien feeling. But not because of some sort of a gloomy undertone. The movie leaves you with hope. Hope because you have known so many things since your childhood, so many things where you knew you were right, so many things that should be explained in much simpler ways. This movie will remind you to that, it will create you remember it. And if you never had this experience before it will give it to you instantly.Pure awesomeness and . . . well no I leave the review like this . . .Thank you for putting this out, reaching so many folks already. It is worth each effort to spread the word even further!!

LOVE LOVE LOVE this movie/documentary! It's so much more than just a movie, it reaches the soul, my soul at least :) Because of the recognition on so many lvls it gives you a feeling of "connection". (This sentence you might understand better when you've now seen it ;) I think it's wise for everyone, no matter what age, to see this film (at least ones) But I saw it twice already. Allow it take you through all of your layers and surfaces into your depth, obtain it there because this film will stay with you, for at least a while. Very unconventional but the better for it. Hats off to the makers! Nice Stuff!!XX Barbra
