Science of Babies #

Released 8/7/2007

Description: As fresh parents can attest, kids develop so much in the first year of their life it's difficult to hold up. From the moment they draw their initial breath - itself an incredibly complicated biological feat - to their first steps, it's a year of remarkable development. In The Science of Babies, Nat Geo explores the nice biomechanical benchmarks achieved in the first 12 months of human life. Using CGI, fMRI and another tools, viewers can watch as a baby's lungs draw breath for the first time, and can witness the heart grow exponentially in order to power this wonderful developing creature. Perhaps even more fascinating is the manner in which the neurosynapses develop, creating the essence of what will become a fresh personality and intellect. This movie explores the nice mechanics behind the initial milestones in a human infant's life, and even compares them to babies of another species.

Description: Exploring the life and impact of the best spiritual and legal philosopher in Islamic history, this movie examines Ghazali's existential crisis of faith that arose from his rejection of religious dogmatism, and reveals profound parallels with our own times. Ghazali became known as the Proof of Islam and his path of love and spiritual excellence overcame the pitfalls of the organised religion of his day. His path was largely abandoned by early 20th century Muslim reformers for the more strident and less tolerant school of Ibn Taymiyya. Combining drama with documentary, this movie argues that Ghazali's Islam is the antidote for today's terror.

Reconversão #

Released 8/11/2012

Description: With Reconversão (Reconversion), Thom Andersen opens other fascinating chapter of his ongoing investigation of architectural landscapes, their filmic representation, and their relation to history, by focusing on 17 buildings and projects by the often-controversial Portuguese architect Eduardo Souto de Moura—winner of the 2011 Pritzker Prize. Echoing Dziga Vertov’s ideas and Eadweard Muybridge’s techniques (shooting only one or two frames per second), Andersen masterfully brings forward what makes Souto de Moura an original: the incorporation of the passing of time into architectural designs, positing them within a history fraught with class struggle and societal changes, in a continuum with ruins—from which they may originate, and to which they will return—and with nature—which they frame, and by which they are framed.

Great Tenor Performances #

Released 2/23/1999

Description: Nice Tenor Performances outbids the popular Three Tenors by putting a dozen tenors (including the large three--Jose Carreras, Placido Domingo, and Luciano Pavarotti) in one compilation. One or two numbers fall short of greatness, but within the limits of what was accessible to them, the producers live up to the ambitious title. Domingo is particularly well represented with three arias, and Carreras has two. Only one Pavarotti performance is shown, but it's a nice one: a youthful Celeste Aida from San Francisco. But the true meat is in the work of the another nine tenors. The muscular Samson of Jon Vickers contrasts with the bel canto delicacy of Tag Ainsley and Max-Rene Cosotti. Vladimir Atlantov as Otello, Giacomo Aragall as Cavaradossi, and Neil Shicoff as Rodolfo in La Bohème present that Domingo is not the sole proprietor of these roles. A pleasing rarity is Roberto Alagna in two excerpts from Verdi's original ver of Don Carlos, with a French text.
