New Times at Crossroad Street #

Released 1/1/1999

Description: Ten years have passed since we made the movie “Crossroad Street”, about a tiny road in the suburbs of the town of Riga. Actually we’ve come back. Perhaps it was a sense of duty, perhaps nostalgia that brought us back – who knows? Perhaps it was both. Daiga, Aldis, Osis – they’re all our people. The first movie had an impact on both the filmmakers and the residents of Crossroad Street. We found mates whom we wish to meet again and again. Society has become more prosperous, few value systems coexist side-by-side. Folks often live in these systems as though they were in various worlds that never meet. We felt that the globe inhabited by our folks is sinking into oblivion, and so we wanted to present that it still has its own turbulence, that Crossroad Road resembles Latvia’s palm – the zone where a fortune teller can see the lines of its destiny.

Die Höhle des gelben Hundes Reviews:

Its a beautiful, quiet film about the scenic Mongolian nomad life. It very well befits as, but not only as, a kids film as it doesn't include any violence or sexual hints. Its above all a praise for a life close to nature and enchants with its depiction of the nomad family life and breathtaking landscape views. The storyline of the heroine of the movie, a tiny girl, is quietly said in a manner that Hollywood productions have almost exclusively unlearned. Films don't need to cost 80 million dollars to be a lasting memory. This tiny film has an odd strength to it, probably drawing it from the old Mongolian culture it themes to depict.

Pretty and moving. The storyline is simple, a woman who wants to hold a stray dog and a dad who refuses, because he believes it might have grown up with wolves . As you will see, a nice film does not need explosions and unique results (if you are into films with violence and action, it is definitely not for you). There are no actors in this film, just easy people. It is not an ethnographic documentary or a tutorial to life in the steppe...it is just a movie about humble folks who live differently and who can be satisfied without the modern comforts. It has won a number of awards: Golden Starfish Prize, KODAK Award, Artemis Records Original Film Score Award Hamptons 2005.

Quite simply, "The Cave Of The Yellow Dog" is a unbelievable film: it is heart-warming, life-affirming. It is simple, touching, unpretentious, with a documentary quality to it (how do folks live there); it came as no surprise to see on the closing credits that this is a genuine family. Very probably non-professional actors (how should the tiny kids act?). I saw it twice in two days and on second viewing, one can appreciate its subtle construction, how tiny features pave the method for slight plot twists: more going on under the surface than it originally looks like. For instance the reason behind the father's reluctance; the mixing of dogs and wolves; the people's economic conditions; the (potentially dangerous) presence of vultures in the background, and so on, all of which receive to enjoy a part at some soon stage. Just go and see it, this movie is an utter breath of new air. Pretty ethnic melody as well.
