Description: The film’s subtitle identifies it as a “study of the creative discontent of a composer”. It is a portrait of the pugnacious musician Paul Dessau (1894 – 1979), who was controversial in East Germany, as a teacher. It follows the composer as he rehearses the “Bach Variations” with the Berlin state opera orchestra, as well during classes at the Polytechnic School I in Zeuthen, where he strives to teach the students a critical attitude. In an interview, Dessau bemoans the simplification of artistic media and elucidates the meaning and necessity of “hard sounds in an era that is not soft”. As we see when he works, “pleasure requires effort” … “art is never comfortable. Building socialism is not comfortable at all. That’s why I’m in favour of the uncomfortable”.

Or they transport on to the next zone – which is never any better. Sometimes, around the evening campfire, they talk about what they’ve experienced – until someone tells that it’d be better not to talk at all, it’s too painful.

The writing of the script for movie no. 29 and the parallel efforts to safe financing form the thread that runs through this cinematic portrait, which consists wholly of conversations and observations around Thome’s home, a converted farm in Brandenburg. The filmmaker is nothing if not forthcoming, and the viewer has the occasion to experience him in different another roles: as a gardener, a father, a cyclist, and a performer of his own persona.
Description: This detail documentary provides a gripping retrospective of United States-Canada relationships through a study of successive presidents and prime ministers. Using archival movie footage, it demonstrates that Canadian prime ministers, from John A. Macdonald down, all began their tenures by making overtures to their American counterparts. Attitudes and outcomes have varied widely. The almost comic antipathy between Kennedy and Diefenbaker, for instance, is as palpable here as is the folksy camaraderie of Reagan and Mulroney.
