Description: A celebration of creativity, community, and friendship, The Visitors (2012) documents a 64-minute durational performance Kjartansson staged with some of his closest mates at the romantically dilapidated Rokeby Farm in upstate Fresh York. Every of the nine channels shows a musician or group of musicians, including some of Iceland’s most renowned as well as members of the family that owns Rokeby Farm, performing in a separate zone in the storied house and grounds; every wears headphones to hear the others. As the melody starts and repeats, individual users stop, start, and transport between rooms. Viewed together, the individual videos show an ensemble performance Kjartansson calls a “feminine nihilistic gospel song.” The piece itself sets lyrics from a poem by artist Ásdís Sif Gunnarsdóttir, Ragnar´s ex-wife, to a musical arrangement by the artist and Icelandic musician Davíð Þór Jónsson; the game comes from a 1981 album from Swedish pop band ABBA, meant to be its last.

Description: Chronicling two years in the life of “psycho white trash punk band”, The Dirty Works, this startling movie expands the boundaries of traditional rock documentaries in a manner that is not everytime comfortable, but is everytime riveting. The multi-textured film explores few themes, including mental illness, addiction, relationships, family dysfunction, and the struggle for artistic expression in the heart of America’s “Bible Belt.” Centered on frontman Christopher Scum, Rebel Scum is, at its core, the storyline of one man’s continued drive to make art in spite of the barriers imposed by society and his own self-destructive tendencies. Bouncing intermittently between the extremes of comedy and tragedy, the movie reveals a seedy American underworld that is, at once, both fascinating and repulsive.

Description: Later... Louder is combination of the most rock & roll moments from Jools Holland's late night BBC2 show, which offers the only slot currently on terrestrial TV for Fresh and experimental music. Due to this, Later... Louder offers the cream of the indie and rock crop over the last 10 years. Beginning with Dave Grohl in fine form with the Foo Fighters, we then switch to his friends Queens of the Stone Age belting out "No One Knows". More spot-the-connection fun follows, as the Screaming Trees' 1996 performance of "All I Know" sees a young Josh Homme on lead guitar. These connections run cute much all the method through the disc, which adds an interesting slant on how to make a DVD track listing. With stand-out performances from the White Stripes, PJ Harvey and the Soundtrack of our Lives, Later... Louder also details the interviews from the original shows with such wide ranging talents as Fresh Order and Courtney Love. This is a gotta for all those who are in need of a varied rock diet.

A couple of entertaining interviews, a image gallery, and a short (and, sadly, very poorly narrated) documentary on the band's history finished the portrait.

I got this out of the 50 musicals set. It told it was in Technicolor but it the print was curiously in black and white. The Plot-a dancing master gets kidnapped to be a galley worker on a pirate boat. He ends up in Calfornia near Monterey which at that time was populated with Mexicans. At first they arrest him, but he charms the entire town. This was an entertaining tiny musical. Not excellent and not a classic but definitely worth a look for Charles Collins and Frank Morgan. It had a lead I have never heard of... Charles Collins who was quite a talented dancer-singer-actor . He type of looks like Kevin Kline. Amazed the boy didn't have a more illustrious career as he had all the makings of what constituted a star back then. Quite an interesting discovery. Frank Morgan (the sorcerer of oz) is quite funny as the bumbling mayor. The movie was quite enjoyable.
The Dancing Pirate is worth watching for a few reasons: the over-the-top early Technicolor hues, the spectacular finale featuring the Royal Cansino Dancers (including a young Rita Hayworth) and a very tiny appearance at the beginning of the film by Pat Ryan, soon to be Pat Nixon. But more than these things, I like The Dancing Pirate as a forgotten film about Los Angeles. The film depicts a Boston dance teacher kidnapped by pirates who escapes into the sleepy Alta California village of La Paloma. This is an obvious adaptation of the real-life storyline of Joseph Chapman. Chapman, originally from Boston, deserted Hippolyte de Bouchard's piratical coastal raiding party to become the first yanqui resident of Los Angeles in 1818. Chapman, like the hero in the movie, became a solid citizen of the tiny pueblo. Unlike the hero in the movie, there's no historical evidence that Chapman should dance, however.
I would have liked the film even more, I'm sure, if I'd seen the color version. Unfortunately, the only ver I should search was the black-and-white, which I bought out of curiosity from a bin of one dollar DVDs at Wal-Mart. Anyhow, "The Dancing Pirate" is certainly no masterpiece, but it's difficult to dislike this movie. It's harmless, goofy, sort-of-weird entertainment (just about what you'd expect from the title), and the main hero is a likable guy. Unfortunately, the film doesn't now include any dancing pirates (the main character, "a dancing master," is mistaken for a pirate), but the dancing it does include ain't bad. If you're the kind of person who'd consider purchasing a film named "The Dancing Pirate" from a bin of one dollar DVDs at Wal-Mart, you'll like this movie, as did I.
