The Blooms Of Banjeli #

Released 1/1/1986

Description: The Blooms of Banjeli documents research in Banjeli, Togo on iron-smelting technology, its rituals, and the sexual prohibitions surrounding it. Including rare historical footage from the same village in 1914, it provides a special technological record of the traditional way of preparing a furnace to smelt iron. This documentary offers an interesting approach to our understanding of the relationship between conceptions of gender and technology in traditional African society. The folks of Banjeli liken the furnace to a woman's body, which is 'impregnated' by the smelter. The process of smelting is compared to that of giving birth, the furnace being the womb and the iron bloom, the newborn.

Czasem snie, ze latam Reviews:

Opening with an wonderful visual metaphor—a slow-motion horse race with close ups on the legs and muscles of the horses, representing ballet dancers—and moving through the movie with gorgeously-shot scenes, Sometimes I Dream I'm Flying visually feels much more like a detail narrative than a documentary. Popiel-Machnicka follows the ballet career of Weronika Frodyma over the course of few years—from a ballet school in Poland to St. Petersburg, Russia to Las Palmas, Spain and finally to Berlin. By including behind-the-scenes looks at Frodyma's training, visits to different doctors and experiences with pain, Popiel-Machnicka is able to peel past the beauty of ballet and demonstrate the real difficulty of the profession. The musical composition provided by Rafal Kulczycki is particularly worth noting, and works enormously well with the editing of the documentary. Sometimes I Dream I'm Flying is easy one of the most visually pleasing Slamdance movies this year.
