The Japanese code of conduct is indeed deeply rooted in their Buddhist traditions, and young filmmakers Tim Graf and Jakob Montrasio observe in feature what this means for the folks and their religion. At graveyards, in temples, at monasteries and with families, they question the impact this triple affliction has had on the lives and beliefs of the inhabitants. How deeply do their beliefs affect their grieving? What role do the monks enjoy in assisting folks with their grief? And, what results has this enormous catastrophe had on their religious rituals? SOULS OF ZEN inserts the happenings of March 2011 into the context of traditional Zen Buddhism, examining Japan’s religiousness and the beliefs of those practising it at a crucial turning point.

Description: Bumpy are the pot-holed streets of Bulgaria’s capital Sofia. Doctor Krassi, nurse Mila and driver Plamen fly over them everyday at break-neck speed. Together the three form one of 13 ambulance squads providing assistance to over two million people. They zoom around the town on double shifts from one emergency to the next. Ilian Metev’s camera is not aimed at those in need of support – their dignity remains preserved. He focuses instead upon the rescue squad Krassi, Mila and Plamen and their wild rides across the town on a never-ending war with time – a feat almost impossible without humour. The ambulance squad war vs a ramshackle health system with passion, selflessness and sometimes near resignation. Ilian Metlev accompanied the trio for more than two years to search photos that create poetry of the human figure and this depiction of reality.

Take the 5:10 to Dreamland #

Released 6/1/1976

Description: Its slow somnambulic rhythm, its animalistic jungle sounds as well as the eerily mixed photos make a dream mood that comes closest to my current dreaming-feeling. The long black phases between the sequences are as necessary as the photos themselves because they leave empty zone where the "echo" of the last photo can seep through without interfering with the following image. But our logical mind still somehow feels compelled to construe some type of sense, parallel, or some erratic storyline out of it.
