Description: CHARGE is proof that maniacs on motorcycles can be a force for global good. The film follows few squads to the world's first zero-emissions grand prix on the Isle of Boy – the most demanding and deadly circuit on the planet – in 2009 and on their return in 2010, 2011, and 2012. For the visionaries, it's history. For the petrol-heads it's blasphemy. What's racing without the sound and fury of internal combustion engines? CHARGE is about the future. It's about change. Description: The Hefbrug, the topics of The Bridge, is not a specially pretty or monumental bridge. But Ivens’ achievement is to convey the importance of this bridge for the entire of Rotterdam. We have a sense of the commercial imperatives behind the bridge, and the intricacy of the mechanism required to swing the bridge or raise the rail decking to let ships to pass through. There is everytime a solid sense of context throughout the 14 mins of the film. It opens with shots of a camera and cameraman, instantly establishing a mission of view for what follows. Again we have a mix of close-ups, and long shots, bird’s eye views and weak angles. The sense of the bridge’s structure, its methods of operating, how it fits into the overall move infrastructure of the town – all are conveyed through the visuals. It is a strong example of how a silent movie can convey its message without words.

[…] Some American footage has also been used. To receive material as impressive as possible, a number of films, 0-60, have been viewed." Based on concepts by Dziga Vertov, and largely assembled from the last reel of his movie 'The Eleventh Year', this compilation presents an explicit critique of the very technology that Vertov sought to praise, stressing the dark side of industrialization—hands mangled in workplace accidents, train wrecks, coffins—and connects to a particularly German concern with the negative results of technology stretching from the Romantics to Heidegger, Horkheimer, and Adorno in the twentieth century.
