Katka #

Released 2/25/2010

Description: “You bet on someone in the beginning of the process and then you wait and see what life does with them.” This is how Czech director Helena Trestikova explains her long-term documentaries. Following on from the European Movie Academy Award winning RENE (2008), Trestikova brings us KATKA – 14 years in the life of a drug addict. KATKA is an extraordinarily raw and uncensored hero portrait of a troubled young girl living on the edge of human existence, desperately searching for love and salvation. Will she search it in the rehab? Will she search it in the arms of the boy she loves? Or in the first cry of her long-desired baby? Tagging along with her through the back roads and squalors of Prague, Trestikova gets deep under the skin of a person most of us would cross the street to avoid, and shows us Katka’s profoundly human face. You might be mad with Katka, or your heart may go out to her. One thing is certain – you will never forget her.

Description: Dolphins: The Wild Side follows these mammals in the wild as they war for mating rights, hunt for food, and clash with another dolphin species. Thanks to some brilliant underwater camerawork, we're treated to the sight of dolphins hydroplaning through 10 inches of water after fish, ramming one another in a quarrel over females, and evading a group of hungry orcas in Alaska. (Killer whales are now part of the dolphin family, but they feel no compunction about feeding on their smaller cousins--not a stage for the squeamish!) But perhaps the most impressive part of this documentary are the scenes of a dolphin pod working in concert to trap a shimmering, mammoth school of sardines. Through calculated test of air bubbles, tail slaps, and sonic pips, the animals corral their prey and have a feast. The clever, and at times ruthless, nature of these mammals is on abundant display in this entertaining documentary

Meat Loaf: Bat Out of Hell #

Released 1/1/1999

Description: Never one for understatement, the aptly called singer known as Meat Loaf (aka Marvin Lee Aday) teamed with operatically-minded pianist-composer Jim Steinman to produce a bombastic slab of 1970s classic rock that has become one of the largest selling albums of all time. Fueled by Steinman's epic compositions, Todd Rundgren's grandiose production, and Meat Loaf's own soaring vocals, the singer's 1977 debut BAT OUT OF HELL elevated the rock-opera category to appropriately theatrical heights with its extravagant orchestration and a melodramatic narrative celebrating teenage rebellion. This episode of the CLASSIC ALBUMS series recounts the making of this monumental work through interviews, archival footage, and live performances of album tracks such as "You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth," "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad," and, of course, the adolescent opus "Paradise by the Dashboard Light."

Compared To What: The Improbable Journey Of Barney Frank Reviews:

I had heard this was a nice biopic, but happened to stumble on it by accident while I was channel-surfing one night. I couldn't turn it off. Very funny and informative. Highly recommended. A brilliant boy and a nice debater with quick-acerbic wit, Barney Frank was everytime the smartest and (most times also the most controversial) person in the room. Of course, no matter who we are, if we remain long enough in a career we are bound to create some decisions that have negative consequences. As the movie points out, Barney Frank by his own admission made a few, but in this candid documentary we see that his contributions and political achievements far outweigh those missteps and Frank's legacy would be the envy of most life-long politicians. Our nation has become so divided in the last decade that the ability to gauge a biographical piece objectively has become almost non-existent. Unfortunately I'm guessing a majority of folks will probably view this movie after he's gone-- maybe as a historical happy/sad tribute to a consummate politician who fought hard, quick and unabashedly for each single thing he believed in. I give it eight stars out of ten and honestly trust this man's storyline will inspire and embolden many various lives and peoples-- whether it's the child you see who comes home crying after a crappy day of getting bullied at school -- or a simple, hard-working adult who's hoping to search that tricky path to success, recognition and self-esteem without compromising his or her principles.

Barney Frank is an interesting person to do a movie about. He was voted the most brilliant member of Congress by his peers and many would also have considered him one of the most cantankerous. This movie captures all the sides of Barney and showcases his rapier wit and sense of humor which made him so well liked and sometimes feared. It is the storyline of a boy who hid his homosexuality so that he should participate in public life to do nice for people. He grew up in the 50s a very various time in the United States for gay people. He spent many years fearing that his being gay would end his career and living only one side of his life - the political side- giving up the personal. But even before he finally came out he fought for the rights of the LGBT community and is a character to so many who understand without Barney Frank the LGBT community wouldn't be where we are today. It is the storyline of a successful politician who eventually succeeds in finding love and feeling finished as a human being. Above all Barney Frank comes off as very human. His husband Jim tells in the movie that he fell in love with Barney despite the public persona and laughs that he ended up in the Capitol Hill wives club.I would suggest this movie to anyone who wants to understand Washington, DC a tiny better and to see that there was a time before 1990 that the Congress now did work.
