Description: Don McGlynn's uncompromising and soulful documentary look at the tumultuous life of musician and rebel Charles Mingus is fascinating stuff. Mingus told of himself "I am half black man, half yellow man, but I claim to be a Negro. I am Charles Mingus, the famed jazz musician--but not famed enough to create a living in America." His statement summed up the conflict that plagued this musical genius his whole life: volatility, pain, prescience, and raw rage roiled inside a complex man, composer, bass player, and trombonist who transcended labels and refused to be pigeonholed into a single musical style--and who did not achieve true fame until late in his career.

The Turtles: Happy Together #

Released 1/15/1991

Description: Proving that the Turtles were as vital to '60s pop as many better-known bands, this delicious 1991 documentary is blessed by the lively personalities of Turtles vocalists Tag Volman and Howard Kaylan (a.k.a. "Flo & Eddie"), whose anecdotes (including memorable encounters with Bob Dylan and the Beatles) are as entertaining as the group's enduring music. Interviews with bandmates reveal that the Turtles were genuinely "Happy Together," enjoying their popularity without the ego hassles that plague so many bands. It wasn't all fun and games, but even the "Lawsuits" chapter provides a hilarious primer on the hazards of rock & roll. Greatest of all, the Turtles' hits (including "She's My Girl," "Elenore," and many more) are seamlessly combined with rare concert footage, TV appearances, and promotional films.

1989: The Summer of Rave #

Released 1/31/1996

Set vs the backdrop of ten years of Thatcherism, it was a benign form of revolution, dubbed the Second Summer of Love – all the ravers wanted was the freedom to party… The rave scene, along with the drug Ecstasy, broke down social barriers and even football hooligans were ‘loved up’, solving a trouble the government had never managed to crack. But lurid tabloid headlines and cat-and-mouse minigames with the police eventually turned the dream sour, as the gangster element moved in at the end of the summer.

Pulp: Reading 2011 #

Released 1/1/1980

Description: "Do you remember the first time?" asks the large screen on the main stage, just before Pulp arrive. Many up the front were but a twinkle when Sheffield's finest debuted Common Folks here, back on this day in 1994 – "Who was here?" questions Jarvis. "Who was born?" Not that it appears to dampen anyone's ardour – and who can blame them, because this is an imperious set, ranging from a excellent F.E.E.L.I.N.G C.A.L.L.E.D L.O.V.E to a glorious Misshapes, its line about "The future that they've got mapped out/ Is nothing left to scream about" sounding more contemporary than ever. Jarvis jumps from towering speaker cabinets, lies horizontal for some athletic hip-thrusting during a torrid This Is Hardcore, and dedicates Joyriders to "the rioters", quipping "they weren't rioting, they were just testing Grand Theft Auto outdoors". Honestly, it's difficult to imagine how their reformation should have been handled any better.

Classic Albums: Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon Reviews:

I got the DVD as a gift and I noticed that the detail documentary on The Dark Side Of The Moon is followed by a DVD-only additional section. This section adds additional footage that was taped but not included in the documentary (probably to avoid making the documentary too long) - an in-depth part on Gilmour's test of the double and triple-tracked guitars, an interview on the nature of Rock 'n Roll with Roger Waters, a storyline on the background voices, etcetera. For any fanatic on Pink Floyd or student of modern music, this DVD is a must-see. Especially noteworthy is the in-depth look at recording and producing Dark Side; since this was pre-computer technology, the stories about the tape-loops to sync the clocks for the intro of Time, the storyline by Waters on making the money register sound for Money, using sequencers for the zone sounds... Their creativity is astounding.A several tiny features were so incredibly interesting - Rick Wright using a piano chord from Miles Davis' Type of Blue for instance was a revelation for me, as I recognised the chord but couldn't zone it.

I half expected this to be a cobbled together compilation of TV interviews, but it's the true deal...each song is dissected by its authors in brand fresh interviews. You also receive unplugged style acoustic versions of "Breathe" and "Brain Damage", by David Gilmour and Roger Waters, respectively, as well as a listen to the demo for "Time". There are rare photos, and Richard Wright plays the piano live. This is a gift to fans! If you're not a fan, what are you reading this for? If you are, pick it up today. This is so exhaustive, it even details interviews with Alan Parsons, who had more than a casual role in the shaping of "Dark Side". No Floyd collection is finished without this.

It's weird to see the members of Pink Floyd looking so old as they talk about their phenomenal "Dark Side of the Moon" album, but that's life, I suppose. They still have what it takes, as David Gilmour shows us, to crank out the music. This behind the scenes DVD is a bit more cerebral than others I've watched but nonetheless fascinating. It's a bit like watching philosophers pontificate, which is alright, I suppose, considering the Floyd was everytime a bit more intellectual than most of your garden tons musicians then and now. We also see the boy who created the cover art that is probably the most recognized album cover in history and his storyline of how it came about and how the members of Pink Floyd chose it is revealing in its simplicity. We also search out who the lovely female vocalist on "The Nice Gig in the Sky" is and why she felt she had to apologize right after-wards.
