Description: Crystal Globe is inspired by J.G Ballard’s apocalyptic science fiction novel of the same name where a viral crystal metamorphoses trees, animals, humans and architecture into frozen jewels forever suspended in time and space. The novel is a haunting portrait of a globe in which everything is illuminated by prismatic light, a ‘leaking’ of time that causes humans to experience individual moments endlessly looped, repeated and prolonged. My movie adapts this idea of crystallization and applies it to fragments from the 1955 film. I reconstruct scenes from Charles Laughton’s iconic movie with underwater puppets, which I then crystallize using ammonium phosphate crystals, time-lapse photography, mirrors, prisms, and projectors. Description: “This film is a representation of my spirit’s volatile state. I used animation with poetic comment to analyze my emotions and vexations. I used pencil drawings in translucent frames to present a state of lightness. On the drawings you can see the elements taken from imagination and from true external sights. I did so because our mental states are built from what we can see and what we remember or imagine in abstraction.”—Wojciech Bakowski

This black & white cartoon is from Terrytoons--the same studio that soon brought the globe Might Mouse and Heckle & Jeckle. Never a leader in the industry nor among the better studios, Terrytoons was consistent and lasted for many years....though you almost never see their movies on TV today here in the States. The storyline is about Christopher Columbus. At first, the storyline irritated me, as it promoted many common myths about the guy (such as his being Italian (this is uncertain) and that he sought to prove the globe was round...which he didn't). After all, I was a US and globe history teacher. However, the storyline becomes so ridiculous and silly that I am cute sure no one will think it's a history lesson...especially with the method the movie ended. Fortunately, I loved the ending. Unfortunately, I cute much disliked everything else...especially all the singing. Not brilliant not a pleasure to watch.
The Terrytoons are oddly interesting, mainly for anybody wanting to see (generally) older cartoons made by lesser known and lower-budget studios. They are a mixed bag in quality, with some better than others, often with outstanding melody and with some mild amusement and charm and variable in animation, characterisation and content.1938, like all the another years for Terrytoons, saw a hit and miss batch. Of which 'Chris Columbo' is one of the weak middle ones ranking it in correlation with the rest of the Terrytoons, and one of the lesser ones of the 1938 batch. It is an unexceptional, nothing exactly unique and somewhat lacklustre cartoon and has the same amount of issues as it has the amount of strengths. Completest sake is the main reason to see it.Best asset is the music, which predictably is incredible. It is so beautifully and cleverly orchestrated and arranged, is nice fun to listen to and full of lively energy, doing so well with enhancing the action. The ambitious, elaborate feature in the backgrounds in territories is still nice to see and some synchronisation is neat.A tiny charm here and there and the occasional mildly amusing touch.Transitions in the animation are still a bit crude and lacking in smoothness and the lack of finesse shows in some of the drawing too, even though generally the quality in comparison to previous years has improved.Likewise, the storyline is paper thin and formulaic, a familiar storyline with very over-familiar execution. It's also cute dull, due to a lot of padding and not enough content. None of the characters are memorable allow alone particularly funny or endearing, the conflict is stale and parts test too difficult to be cute.Gags are scarce, or at least nowhere near enough, and what there is is nothing to write home about, too much of it is very stale. The charm isn't enough either, neither is the tension, and some of it is structured in a choppy manner. Too much is too saccharine like at the start. All in all, mediocre. 4/10 Bethany Cox
This is a one-shot cartoon produced by Terrytoons studio. There will be spoilers ahead: Terrytoons made a number of cartoons along the same lines as this one-opera arias for dialog, major issues cropping up for dramatic result and more than a several scenes reusing footage to save cash and pad the cartoon. There are a several noteworthy bits here, but this feels like a retread all too often.Chris Colombo is trying to convince folks the globe is round, singing in an aria no less! This cartoon has more than its share of stereotypical references to Italians which would have been well-known to audiences of the day. The thing is, most of them fall flat. They may not have been funny even when this was made.Chris attracts the attention of Queen Isabella, who bets her fortune on a couple of passes of dice. She learns (the difficult way) that the dice were "loaded" after Chris leaves. Chris has one ship and his team consists of organ grinders, their monkeys and one parrot. The organ grinders all look the same. The parrot spots a storm and warns Chris and the crew. It's here that the animators now receive to have some fun, even if they do reuse some footage to the mission of tedium. It's a fascinating minigame of catch, at least the first two or three times it is. That and the storm cloud literally battering the ship with fists are the greatest animated sequences. The storm probably has the greatest line in the cartoon. The ending is a bit various and is definitely a surprise, so I won't spoil that here. This short is worth seeing at least once.
