Out of all the Vietnamese movies I saw at the 2017 LA Asian Pacific Movie Festival, the only one stood out was Father and Son (Cha Cong Con). The another three movies were rather tamed in my opinion. Father and Son's familiar tear-jerking storyline mostly appeals to older audience but everyone could check it out for the stunning cinematography and nostalgic elements. As common in Vietnamese films, the easy plot is bleak. Although the actors are adequate, the greatest hero is the setting. The first portion of the movie takes zone in a tranquil mountain region. This is the greatest part of the entire film. It gives us a nice sense of zone and time. Our characters are surrounded by a vast environment of forest, hills, and rivers. Director of photography Ly Thai Dung's keen eyes show nature as nurturing and cruel. On one hand, he shows us pretty shots of innocent kids marveling at sun rays piercing through cloud, a raft floating on the shimmering surface of water, and golden blades of grass waving in the calm breeze during magic hours. On the other, there are allegorical master shots signaling the impending doom associated with the landscape, such as insignificant small human figures walking up a steep foggy slope. Few another visual compositions seem straight out of a Caspar David Friedrich's painting, showing a lonely figure facing a subliminal natural backdrop; a boy sitting on a tiny fishing boat with his back to the viewers contemplating at the indifferent river water in the background.Indeed, mother nature does give and take. Our main characters live off the land by fishing, but during rainy season, their belongings and often family members are swept away by flash floods. The flawed script succeeds in depicting the human inhabitants as resourceful but are still struggling. They are able to slash down trees to build a temporary shelter on higher ground but not having the hindsight to relocate their homes to a various zone where flooding might not occur. The director Luong Dinh Dung pays additional attention to the everyday activities of his characters to give them human values. When the father trades fishes for a sweater as a gift for his beloved son only to realize it's too large to fit. Other stage shows the boy's naive affection toward a baby chick that also serves as a plot device to receive audience invested emotionally considering their eventual grim fates. There are a several another scenes in my opinion that touch on that nostalgic Vietnamese-ness. One is when the father sits by his wife's grave and consults her about the future of his son. A various one shows a group of children hanging off the back of a seemingly giant boy carrying a bicycle uphill. In the daytime, kids playfully dash across grassy fields and roll in mud. At night, they fall asleep peacefully on the laps of their guardian elders who say them magical stories regaling their younger days. These are the scenes that I search most alive in the film. The color palettes compliment the development of the narrative. Forest green and golden hues are used for some of the brighter sequences in the beginning of the film while a bluish-tint permeates across the night punctuated by warm umber gradient from fire pits. Soon when we are in the city, the movie switches to silver tone to bring out that steely and sterile sense of town atmosphere. There are a several outstanding moments approaching magical realism. One is when the father carries the son up the stairs of a high-rise, a swarm of wasps appears to be their obstacle. Other is when kids gawk into the sky at an airplane that is intentionally framed to create it look out of this world. Overall, the movie is a compelling adventure from natural terrain to industrial landscape, from fantasy to reality, and from life to death. The melody appropriately oscillates from joyful carefree melodies to somber moody tunes. I like that the Korean composer Lee Dong June doesn't test any of the cliche traditional Vietnamese musical instruments. Dialogues are sparse. Particular stand-out is of the lead actor - Ngo The Quan. His voice is coarse and subdued. He delivers lines in weak volume with minimal lips movement implying a boy who has lost and sacrificed much. I was said there are several trained actors, and most are locals. Regardless, the kids carry the greatest lines - with a sense of childish wonderment. For example, the son asks his father "when can I grow as large as you?"The film's easy emotional message is quite clear - life is all about the journey, not the destination. It also did a noble job with showing how Vietnam's modern society has alienated certain indigenous groups. However, I just wish to return to asking the question of why folks continue to live in flood zone? I feel this is something the movie could have touched on more although flood is the second major conflict in the film; the first is disease. Is it because of their livelihood, which is fishing in this case? Or is it their ancestral connection to the land? Perhaps, their unwillingness to submit to the whim of nature gives them courage.I'd wished that I should see it in better quality. The screening copy at the movie festival was terrible. It looked like they showed the film from a DVD. This is a movie worth helping if you love Vietnamese cinema. Anyhow, if you're interested in seeing other nice movie from Eastern bloc countries about paternal bondage, I highly suggest Andrey Zvyagintsev's masterpiece, The Return. Also, check out Sokurov's dreamy movie Mother and Son, in which this movie shares a kinship with.
'Father And Son' is a visually stunning film, revolves around the happiness and tragedy of a single-father Moc and his 6-year-old son Ca, who lived near a river- bank, somewhere in Vietnam. This Movie is a directorial debut of Vietnamese filmmaker Luong Dinh Dung, who recently has nominated for prestigious "Remi Award" at 50th Annual Worldfest Houston International Movie Festival this year for this film. Wrote almost 22 years ago by Luong Dung himself, 'Father and son' launch with a remote but picturesque village, where Moc is surviving with his child by selling fishes. The blend of nature and innocent characters take us to the traditional Vietnamese scenario and the stillness of their lives, which are masterfully cinematographic in this film. The storyline moved with the dreams and curiosity of 'ca' and his another tiny mates who are keen towards planes, which they call 'bird from the city' and another nuances of town life. So in the flood season when Moc and Ca, with another community members, transport to uphill, it's the routine of children to listen the storyline of the town from 'uncle Blind' who once worked in that city, building the "Future House' ( biggest skyscraper ). 'Uncle blind' lost his eyes by working in that building only. Going through the pretty imagery of mountains, fog, river, fish and a tragedy of losing a family due to flood, folks returned back to the Riverbank, building their house again from the scratch. Meanwhile, the community members recommended Moc to receive married again, but before Moc think further on this, Ca becomes terribly ill. when the herbs from the forest didn't work, Moc took him to the hospital in the nearest city. Metaphorically, the movie makes a transition from the calm life of Riverbank to the noisy, polluted and hurtled globe of town full of tall buildings and, the "future house of blind man" right, opposite that hospital. This reminds me of Chinese Filmmaker 'Jia Zhangke's movie 'Still Life' which is also based on the related themes of the gap between towns and Riverbank areas. Moc gotta search a method to receive his son proper health-care which of course, is equal of catching 160,000 fishes. when recovered, Ca wants to go on that 'future house of blind'. Metaphorically, the hospital becomes a partition between the reality and the dreams. The movie has superbly crafted soundtrack by Korean composer Lee Dong Jun, the artist behind the sounds of many of that country's famous films like "Miracle in Cell No. 7" and "Taegukgi: The Brotherhood of War". On the hospital bed, Ca dreams about the boat, river, and fish, on the another hand, Moc worries about collecting cash for ca's treatment. Will Moc successfully take Ca to the 'future house of blind man'' where only folks with nice clothes can go? Where these dream and reality intersects? Gursimran Datla twitter.com/ gursimrandatla
