Description: The game “Kamera Obskura” is a Filipino spelling of the latin “Camera Obscura” which simply means “dark room”. The film’s idea adheres to formalist cinema, where the filmmaker’s thesis is to create a semblance of a vintage movie seemingly produced sometime in the late 1920s to early 1930s in the Philippines. The thesis is to conjure up a movie from a period that did not really exist in Philippine cinema’s historical cultural heritage as we know it, such as a pseudo-expressionist / experimental Filipino cinema of the silent movie era. It is a movie within a film. The narrative plays with the concept of a retro-futurist globe where a prisoner locked away in a dark chamber for over two decades only sees the reality of the globe outside through the tiny hole in his cell, which projects an photo of the town on his wall, the phenomenon of the “camera obscura”.

On 13 September 1987, two paper collectors search a massive piece of machine made of lead and weighting about 100 kg in a abandoned field in Goiania. This zone was used by a clinic. They sell this scrap to a junk shop. The blue light emanated from the Cesium stones fascinates the junkman, and he shows and gives some of them as a gift to many locals, humble and ignorant Brazilian persons living in a terrible zone of Goiás. We Brazilian lived and became aware of this poor fact in 1987. A population of humble folks were contaminated by Cesium 137 as showed in a dramatic method in this movie. I regret this film be limited to the drama of some locals only. It could have gone further, showing the irresponsibility of the government and the Owners of the clinic who left this Cesium 137 without any care in a field without any protection. The lack of punishment of these responsible and their names could also be shown in this film. The screenwriter and director Roberto Pires lost the occasion to create a masterpiece like, for example, Costa-Gravas usually presents in his movies. This fact remains as a shame in the newest Brazilian history. A shallow film of a nice and deep wound in Brazilian history. My vote is seven.
The closest our cinema will ever receive to the strong "The China Syndrome" and deal with the dangers of nuclear energy and radioactivity. Both movies are quite haunting and know how to impress its viewers. But "Césio 137 - O Pesadelo de Goiânia" ("Goiânia's Nightmare") has a more devastating result afterwards because it's about a true tragedy that took zone in Goiânia, in 1987 and it's considered the largest radiological incident ever registered. It all started when two scavengers (played by Paulo Gorgulho and Paulo Betti) took a massive metal object from an abandoned hospital to sell the material thinking it would have some scrap value. Sold the material to scrapyard owner Devair (Nelson Xavier), the issues began right away when the boys started to feel sick, and everyone around them blamed about the meal they ingested. When Devair discovers a blue light coming out of the object, he start to search the object valuable and beautiful, extracting the source of such light to everyone he knows simply because it glows in the dark. Adults like it, children like it. And the rest you can already predict. Tragedy takes zone with more and more folks getting sick believeing they're getting all those issues due to terrible food. What they would search out days soon is that they were contaminated with a radioactive agent from that stolen piece, a composition from a X-Ray device. Although constructed with factual testimonies from the true people, survivors of the happening (that killed 4 folks in 1987 and 80 more in the years to come) this doesn't receive near the true life tragedy, it just gives you a nice and difficult perspective of how the storyline broke out to the world. The brief presentation I made about the movie is the entire movie. Most of it is quite repetitive, circling time and time again on the object's fate and contamination. But not much time were given to the aftermath of the case, rushing things in the nickname of time. A better script and a better editing would support an already nice film. It's a strong movie and we can all accept on that. It's a storyline about a tragic ignorance from all sides - the population, the medical doctors, the authorities who managed the isolation afterwards and tiny did they know about it - but the radiation isn't the sole invisible villain from it. We need to talk about the "educated" folks who closed down a entire facility and left those equipments there. Their stupidity is enormous, the another invisible villain from the movie. In the true case, they were fined in court but no one was held responsible, no one went to jail for their shameful mistake. As told before, this doesn't receive near the frightening scenario. In 2003 was released the informative short documentary "Césio 137, O Brilho da Morte" which says not only about the tragedy but also the fate of the population who lived through it. One of my best joy was to see that the only concerned hero of the movie, a nurse who alarmed folks about the dangers of dealing with unknown materials taken from a hospital, is still living. But the shock came when it was revealed that Roberto Pires, the director of this film, was one of the Césio victims, dying a several years later. The documentary is not credited on this website but it's simple to be found and it says a lot about of the prejudice the victims suffer even today, living in a town associated with the radiation. Credible performances makes of this a very reliable project, specially the nice acting from Xavier who commonly plays wise characters in films and TV series but here gets an 180 degree turn, a scary transformation; the nice Joana Fomm who plays his wife and the perfect Denise Milfont, who plays the courageous nurse. Overall, depressive but something to be seen. 8/10
It's one of those films that (almost) makes you knock your head vs the screen a *superlative number of your choice* of times. Pick a true tragedy, some really nice actors and actresses, shining blue lights, and some terrible '80's style songs, then you'll have a brief concept of what "Césio 137-O Pesadelo de Goiânia" is about. The film itself has a (very well made) depressing, revolting touch; two young boys on a slum-like neighborhood of Goiânia, a huge town on Brazilian's Mid-West, trying to search a method to receive some money, go to a demolished hospital, where they end up finding a strange and massive lead thing with a tiny steel container inside. They pick both, and then they head to Devair (Nelson Xavier)'s junk shop. Devair buys the lead thing, but tells the steel box is just trash, since there's no test for it... the two "looters" then decide to give it to him, after all, there's no test keeping a massive and useless steel box. A curious Devair decides to check out what is that stuff... he opens the container, and see some small stones on it. Guessing that's nothing valuable in it, he goes back to his everyday life, until he found out that those tiny stones produced a shining blue light...Fascinated, he then gives some stones to everyone he knows, as a gift, but, for some weird reason, everyone begins getting ill and with tiny burns...Through the film, you can see lots of displays of ignorance of the population, who blames food, sins, and even lunching at a friend's house on a Sunday. It was a true tragedy, specially because it should be avoided by easy means. About 10 folks have died (officially, only 4...), and lots are suffering with tumors, cancer, and amputations. It's one of those films that each "BR" (and not only us!) could watch, be for the lesson, or for the film itself. Rating: 7/10
