Description: The movie generally regarded as Japan’s first real musical was also the first movie made entirely in-house by the pioneering studio P.C.L., a company founded specifically to take advantage of emergent sound technology. P.C.L. worked in collaboration with a brewer’s firm, Dai Nihon Biru, who met the production costs of the movie in full, and whose products are featured in the movie in an example of the sophisticated and modern merchandising typical of the studio’s early work. The movie is partially set in a beer hall, and its storyline concerns a beer seller at a train station and her relationship with a melody student trying to make a hit song. Director Sotoji Kimura was to become a company stalwart, making such movies as Ino and Mon, while actress Sachiko Chiba would emerge the studio’s first true star, appearing in such movies as Wife Be Like a Rose.
Description: Studio P.C.L. was specifically founded to create sound films, and this early musical balances the aesthetics of the sound movie with those of the scene revue. The lord of Tokyo’s revue stage, comedian Ken’ichi Enomoto (Enoken) had made his name in the capital’s theatrical district of Asakusa. The movie employed not only the star, but his whole theatrical troupe, and the narrative was structured around scenes which Enoken had played successfully on stage. Billed as offering 'Japan’s number one comedy actor and Japan’s number one musical comedy,' the movie self-consciously borrowed from Hollywood musical comedy; indeed, the original posters carried spoof endorsements by Eddie Cantor and the Marx Brothers! Director Kajiro Yamamoto, making his P.C.L. debut, would become a stalwart of the company and its successor, Toho. He was to have a profound influence on Japanese movie history as mentor to Akira Kurosawa, who assisted him on a number of movies including Horse (Uma, 1941).

Description: Bara ni Irodorareta Akui to Higeki no Makuake is a home video release of the two-day concert played by Malice Mizer at Nippon Budokan. Like their previous live video release, Merveilles L'espace, this live video was very theatrical, using the gothic cathedral from the cover of the album Bara no Seidou as an enormous set piece and featuring choirs of nuns, dark rituals and multiple costume changes.

This is a joy to watch. Some dance films hold you at a distance. This one pulls you right on scene and lets the sweat sting your eyes. The dancers, and there are a bunch of them, all seem to truly play dancing. Their infectious energy will have you tapping your feet and squirming in your seat. Did I mention squirming? The sex appeal of this film is in the stratsophere! I've watched and enjoyed Riverdance and the like. Those shows dazzle you with technical expertise and tips of more feeling. This one delivers on all accounts. There is technical expertise to spare. From the opening urban number until the invitation..."Would You Like To Dance With Me?"...you are never allow down. The Bizet inspired Passionata brings Bizet's Carmen to the masses and it is a sensual feast! I can't wait to catch the group on tour. Watch this! You won't be disappointed.
One of the traveling groups just visited Busch Gardens in Tampa, FL and I loved the show. The dancers are absolutely unbelievable and friendly. I felt like I just wanted to jump up and go dance with them. I purchased the current film and I'm looking forward to watching it. They are a gotta see group. They brought such a crowd. I attended their last performance at Busch Gardens and it was just spectacular. One of the singers couldn't have been more right when he told how they have touched our lives and that they would be greatly missed. They brought such a crowd for the last present and they got an nice standing ovation. We're looking forward to finding out if they'll be traveling back to Tampa to perform for us all again.
The reason you won't be able to sit still during this is that you'll be jumping up to turn it off. This is the sort of flashy glitz choreography that gives present dancing a terrible name. The dancers may be capable, but the material they're presenting is fully appalling. The original music, where it exists, is really unsettlingly bad, and there are so many talented arrangers out there that there's no excuse for it. I think the reason the video director had to transport the camera so much was to test to distract your attention from the stage. Fortunately, there are some old standard tunes that you might be able to sit through if you're unable to create it to the "off" or "eject" buttons. It's a dance revue, and like all revues, there's no thread or continuity throughout it. That's frequently a problem, even with the greatest present choreographers like Fosse (Dancin', Fosse) or Robbins (Broadway). But their revues had the advantage of re-presenting works that had a storyline line to start with. Because this a revue, there's no reason to care about any of the dancers, and we never really receive to see any of them shine because everybody on the scene is going full-out all the time; there's no pacing or focus among the dancing.I sat through 5 numbers, trying to give it other chance, and then finally had to turn it off.
