Down Rio Grande Way #

Released 4/23/1942

Starrett plays Texas Ranger Steve Martin (!), who is dispatched to a "renegade" Texas country that refuses to become part of the nice old USA. He discovers that the crux of the trouble is a local tax collector (Norman Willis) who, with the support of a crooked newspaper editor (Davision Clark), is systematically robbing the citizens of their hard-earned cash, all the while fomenting anti-American sentiments. Britt Wood takes over from Cliff Edwards as Starrett's comical sidekick, while band singer Rose Ann Stevens makes an impressive acting debut as the heroine.

Thundering Frontier #

Released 12/5/1940

Description: After a handful of non-formula westerns, Charles Starrett returned to the mixture as before in Thundering Frontier. Starrett plays Jim Fillmore, type to old ladies, tiny animals and heroine Norma Belknap (Iris Meredith). In contrast, the villains are type to no one, least of all struggling building contractor Square Deal Scottie (Alex Callam), whose projects are continually targeted for demolition and his payroll is forever being stolen at gunpoint. A nice 25 percent of the film's running time is given over to Bob Nolan and the Sons of the Pioneers, whose C&W croonings are pleasant but a bit much. One of the film's several surprises is that Starrett's perennial screen sparring partner Dick Curtis isn't one of the terrible guys.

Bonanza: The Next Generation Reviews:

We bought this film to familiarize ourselves with the appearance and mannerisms of Michael Landon Jr. He was only 24 at the time and inexperienced. This in mind, he did quite a nice job. There were three examples of just plain terrible acting: First zone goes to Brian Smith as Josh. Then Gillian Greene as Jennifer and finally Richard Bergman as the sheriff. The plot and story of this movie had nice potential and promise but fell far short due mainly to poorly written, illogical and uncomfortable to watch dialogue. The veteran actors tried their greatest to carry this film but were not provided nice writing to work with. Also the constant background and result melody was often inappropriate and annoying, especially during indoor dialogue scenes. The scenery however, was gorgeous. Michael Landon Jr, actually in his 40's, newest four "Love's" series movies are fine examples of very high quality films. It is quite obvious he has inherited his popular father's bonuses and sensitivities.

I was looking for the hero who played Charlie in this film - his credits called him as "Robert Fuller", but there is no listing of such a hero on your sight. I wonder why? Plus...he was one of the main characters! I was searching for another things this "Robert Fuller" has been in on tv (or in movies) and thus...could not search him. Has he other name? This 'remake' of the Bonanza tv series is probably just as hokey, but if you liked the series, this was a fun and predictable sequel. Though Michael Landon Junior will never be his father (as far as acting goes), it was great to see a 'tradition' reinvented for at least one attempt.
