Description: A sublime, exceptionally well acted movie about a single working class mother and her teenage son. She finds a boy and marries him, her son is jealous and full of hot air at first but comes to understand her in the end. That's all. The simplicity of the storyline notwithstanding, this is one of the most sincere and lyrical movies to have been produced in the 1960s-1970s Soviet Union. Very realistic, too, showing the life as it was then. Lyusyena Ovchinnikova is superb, it is this movie that makes one realize what a unbelievable and under-appreciated actress she was. Nikolay Burlyayev is very nice as a lanky teenager, the final stage with him carrying a glass of carbonated water for his mother is stunning. Oleg Efremov is very convincing as a working class boy who found his happiness at last.

Description: The brutally entitled Don't Be Like Brenda (1973) is an eight-minute lecture to young women, saying them not to be sexually promiscuous like the film's hapless heroine – although heaven knows, the promiscuity hinted at here is tragically modest. Terrible Brenda goes all the method with a man who does not marry her. The movie is stunningly without any helpful educational content on contraception and makes it entirely clear that the woman, not the man, is to blame. The movie even makes her terrible unwanted kid suffer from a heart defect, so that no one wants to adopt the terrible tiny thing – just to hammer the mission home. Other slice of Fresh York sleaze from workhorse Shaun Costello (directing and acting under his usual alias of Russ Carlson), this has one of those hyperbolic come-on games so beloved by both (s)exploitation and made for TV films it couldn't possibly live up to. As long as it place bums on seats, I suppose. At least there is a nominal teen in the shapely form of 14-year old (as different characters hold pointing out, NOT doing this detail any favors in these politically correct times) all American woman Linda Dunraven, played by appealing possibly Canadian fly by night starlet Amanda Blake from Bob Chinn's EROTIC ADVENTURES OF CANDY and LIPPS & McCAIN whose thick accent is strenuously explained as the product of a Paris education. She's the daughter of snooty socialites Arnold (Alan Marlow, the unforgettable womanizer forced to endure women's plight through reincarnation in the curvaceous body of Darby Lloyd Rains from Roberta Findlay's perfect ANGEL # 9) and Helen (Marlene Willoughby) whose appearance-obsessed globe is rocked to its very foundation by Linda's alleged abduction by a gang of bikers. The distraught Helen calls upon personal dick Murray Kaplan (David Joseph a/k/a Leo Lovemore, who was in Costello's hugely enjoyable LOVE BUS, which he helmed as "Oscar Tripe"), a precursor to Dan McCord and just as incompetent, who patiently listens to the girl recounting how she spied on her daughter fooling around with her boyfriend Bobby (Costello's customary helping role) as a prelude to their own three-way with his secretary. While neither the actress portraying Linda nor especially Costello makes a credible teenager, they do wind up having the hottest action in this movie, underscored by a Mike Oldfield track from his Tubular Bells album the director would revisit for the Hillary Summers Broadway audition bit in his lavish 1981 sex through the ages epic PANDORA'S MIRROR. As this is just a one hour movie, Kaplan traces the bikers in record time only to learn that Linda joined them out of her own gratis will, the ransom note solely concocted by her devious parents who were only concerned about what their mates might think of them. Their reputation soiled, the gang (led rather unfathomably by drippy Bobby) break into the Dunraven mansion and thoroughly force themselves upon mom and dad with a nugget of father-daughter incest and a reddening of Helen's posterior with the cat o'nine tails for nice measure. While this does not bring the errant maiden back to her family, it does somehow rekindle the parents' passion for one another. Huh ? Adhering to a mind-boggling logic of its own, this cheerful cheapie gets by on a satisfied go lucky attitude, aided in no tiny measure by the tongue in cheek performance of the inimitable Marlene Willoughby. Tall, slender and alluringly androgynous, looking like an Andy Warhol superstar with that unruly shock of teased black hair (imagine Holly Woodlawn if she had been born a girl), with the sassiest line delivery since Mae West, Willoughby added an intentional layer of camp to each one of her performances whether the material warranted it or not. She would eventually graduate from some of the most intense '70s roughies (DOMINATRIX WITHOUT MERCY, WATERPOWER) to '80s large budget class acts such as Cecil Howard's FOXTROT.
BETRAYED TEENS is other cheapie roughie helmed by the prolific Shaun Costello. Thin on storyline, massive on sex, and a pinch of sleaze thrown in create this one a semi-enjoyable if a bit "tired" roughie entry.Linda is abducted by bikers and her mother contacts a private-dick to search her. Turns out Linda wasn't abducted at all, but was hanging out with the bikers of her own accord. When the gang realizes that the mother concocted the "abduction" story, they decide to go back with Linda in tow to mess with Linda's parents...Lots of goofiness in this one - first off, Linda is played by some French speaking hooker whose massive accent is played off as a by-product of her going to school in France. The plot is cute low and only serves as the barest of threads to keep together the few sex scenes. On the nice side - the hardcore scenes are cute nice and erotic, and there is a bit of additional sleaziness towards the end where the gang whips Linda's mom and forces her to give an inter-racial blowjob, and where Linda decides to go down on her pops as revenge(?!?!?). I don't know if any of Costello's movies will ever reach the "greatness" achieved by his classics WATER POWER and FORCED ENTRY - but so far, none have come close. Even so - most of Costello's movies have been entertaining and/or arousing - so I'll continue to check out his works...6/10
Lusty fourteen-year-old Linda Dunraven (cute and buxom babe Amanda Blake) stems from an affluent family of Fresh York Town socialites. After Linda gets abducted by a gang of bikers, her bitchy mother Helen (ripely played with lip-smacking campy panache by sultry and slender brunette fox Marlene Willoughby) hires incompetent personal detective Murray Kaplan (an amiable portrayal by Leo Lovemore) to search her. Writer/director Shaun Costello relates the absorbing storyline in a tight 57 minute running time, thereby ensuring that this sleazy item never becomes dull or overstays its welcome. Moreover, the sex scenes are quite raunchy and explicit, with Linda's ribald coupling with her boyfriend Bobby (Costello himself) rating as the definite arousing highlight. Of course, this being a Costello flick, there's some kinky items on hand: Linda performs fellatio on her own father and Helen winds up on the receiving end of a bloody whipping by the bikers after they have a group orgy at Linda's parents' house. Bill Markle's rough cinematography boasts few cool shots of dirty 70's Fresh York. Nice filthy smut.
