Description: The documentary BERLINIZED describes this very Berlin-specific attitude in a reflection on and a adventure to mid-1990s' Berlin. Filmmaker Lucian Busse, an active protagonist of the period, documents the transformation of Berlin after the Wall. But Berlinized represents more than just the 1990s - it is a metaphor for this virally catching constructive feeling, the slightly rough directness, spiced up with a large dash of typical Berlin humor. Berlinized lets the former protagonists reflect how that temporary feeling of freedom shaped their individual lives, and to what degree that freedom can still be found among the neat order of today's Berlin. These reflections are as diverse as the interviewees and as multifaceted as the changes in those times.

With power and nuance, Ellerson also confronts the thorny question of cultural authenticity by revisiting the legendary 1991 FESPACO (Pan-African Festival of Cinema and Tv of Ouagadougou), in which diasporian girls were asked to leave a meeting intended for African girl only. Perfect performances by all involved. Timothy West is especially brilliant, but then again, he had the greatest material! A lot of this dialogue are Beecham quotes. For example "Ball?" "Ball, Sir Thomas." "Oh. How very singular." Dry, witty, that was Sir Thomas. Terry Wale fantastic, conveying the spirit of Sir Thomas, trying so difficult to deal with the nonsense of the maestro. Not to mention the folks who had to deal with him.I heard a recording of him berating a piccolo user for not performing his part in "O, wi will ich triumpherim" in Mozarts "Seraglio". He did it nastily at first, then moved it to nice. That is Beecham.
