The New Rulers of the World #

Released 7/18/2001

Description: The myths of globalisation have been incorporated into much of our daily language. "Thinking globally" and "the global economy" are part of a jargon that assumes we are all part of one large global village, where national borders and national identities no longer matter. But what is globalisation? And where is this global village? In 2001, John Pilger made 'The Fresh Rulers of the World', a movie exploring the impact of globalisation. It took Indonesia as the prime example, a country that the Globe Bank described as a 'model pupil' until its 'globalised' economy collapsed in 1998. Globalisation has not only made the globe smaller. It has also made it interdependent. An investment decision made in London can spell unemployment for thousands in Indonesia, while a business decision taken in Tokyo can make thousands of fresh jobs for workers in north-east England.

Released 1/1/1969

Investigating the lack of an African American presence at the protests, the filmmakers follow members of the Chicago chapter of the Black Panther Party as they find for common ground with a tons of white activist groups. In one scene, Panther Bobby Lee and members of the Young Patriots, a community of white Appalachian activists living in the Uptown neighborhood of Chicago, organize to protest police brutality. The seemingly disparate groups search shared social and political objectives that overcome racial differences – police violence, poverty, lack of employment, and terrible living conditions. This potential for a cross-racial and interethnic political movement is the movie’s pretty but unrealized dream.
