The storyline of the relationship between the Austrian and the Jew from Czernowitz is said through their nearly 20-year correspondence (1948–1967). Or, more precisely, by a young girl and a young boy reading from their letters in a studio in Vienna’s venerable Funkhaus.

The filmmaker is nothing if not forthcoming, and the viewer has the occasion to experience him in different another roles: as a gardener, a father, a cyclist, and a performer of his own persona.

In Bed with an Elephant #

Released 1/1/1986

Using archival movie footage, it demonstrates that Canadian prime ministers, from John A. Macdonald down, all began their tenures by making overtures to their American counterparts. Attitudes and outcomes have varied widely. The almost comic antipathy between Kennedy and Diefenbaker, for instance, is as palpable here as is the folksy camaraderie of Reagan and Mulroney.
