As the precedent player has already pointed out, this is not Simenonesque, even to the slightest extent;directed by Jean Dreville,Decoin's screenplay looks like his own tiny (charming ) comedies he made with then-wife Darrieux.Unfortunately, the script is never really exciting and the lines lack madness ,poetry or wit ;sorry it cannot keep a candle to Guitry;and the actresses are not very exciting either:perhaps with Danielle Darrieux and the unbelievable Betty Stockfeld (in "le President Haudecoeur " she almost stole the present from Harry Baur) as the American ,the film would have been more appealing .Perhaps:not sure for the storyline is too derivative. The American girl is a gentle femme fatale :men flutter around her like moths around the flame ;maybe she is to blame for in 1942,the Continental firm did not like the Americans .That's what we can call sweet propaganda!
I'm not familiar with the Georges Simenon novel which forms the basis of this highly entertaining movie but if Henri Decoin was faithful to the original in his adaptation then it is far from the usual Simenon fare and more the zone of Sacha Guitry who now tackled a related topics in Quadrille. Set in Cannes the storyline revolves around the unbearable Annette (Louise Carletti) who falls for handsome lawyer Marcel (Henri Garat) who in turn is pitching the woo to haughty American (and blonde with it) Myriame (Mona Goya) who in turn is attempting to charm the shy Bernard (Georges Rollin). With a brittle script by Decoin even journeyman director Jean Dreville can't knock the gloss of this one and it all moves at a fair clip until the finale which sees Annette getting Marcel to the altar only to ditch him in favour of Bernard. Well worth a look.
