Nathan Englander, Mia Farrow, Jonathan Franzen, and Martin Garbus are among those who talk about the boy and his writing. Franzen in particular praises Roth for “how brave he gotta have been to have methodically offended everybody and to have exposed parts of himself no one had ever exposed before.”

Description: Invented by the post-New Wave, the exercise is well-known: place a filmmaker in the frame, create him talk about his career, evoke his admirations, rummage in his methods, and add words to silences, spoken photos to seen images. It’s everytime very instructive. As is the situation here too. Chantal Akerman, passing through South America, talks about herself for an hour, and it’s fascinating. Even if her recalling of the relationship between the cinema and time makes up only a several rare minutes.

Description: Georgetown is a silver-mining city at 8,500 feet near the crest of the Rockies. Hooked somehow to the rear of a four-car passenger train is a camera that pans the scenery and, when the train goes around curves, looks ahead to see the engine and passenger cars: the passengers wave hundreds of white handkerchiefs out of the train's left-side windows for the benefit of the camera. The city comes into view; the tracks are above the town, so the camera looks down on variety of modest rooftops as it pans the area.
Description: Footage shot not long after the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco is edited together so that more than one stage and more than one vantage are included. We see fire raging. We see burned-out buildings, piles of rubble, and buildings with only one wall standing. Folks stand and watch; others walk purposely through the debris. Description: On 8 August 1991, an Albanian ship carrying 20,000 folks reached the port of Bari. The ship was named the “Vlora”. Mooring was difficult, and some of the passengers jumped overboard to swim to land, while many others chanted “Italia, Italia”, making the win sign. On 7 August 1991, the ship, returning from Cuba, the “Vlora” had arrived at the port of Durrës with 10,000 variety of sugar in its hold. Work on unloading the sugar was underway when an enormous throng of thousands of folks suddenly assailed the ship, forcing the captain to head for Italy. The next morning, waiting for the “Vlora” was an incredulous and stunned town and an empty football stadium where the Albanians were held before being sent back home. Twenty-one years have passed since that day. Most of the folks who boarded that ship were sent back to Albania, but the crossings continued and many of them had other go. Today, 4.5 million foreigners live in Italy.

It was built in 1974 during the Kockum yards most successful period. The crane quickly became a pride for the town and a symbol for an aspiring belief in the future. The yard was shut down in the 80s but the crane was still standing there like a remainder of a lost time. Actually it has been sold to a yard in South Korea and has to be dismantled in four months. I was expecting to see a movie of rock footage and quirky asides as you might think a film on the legendary alternative melody festival ATP would yield. What we got is something a entire lot more than that and all the better for it.For a movie on rock concerts there was surprisingly tiny straight full song concert footage. What we got instead was insight into the motivation and vibe of the festival, and how this sits along side general melody trends and more importantly what that means in a wider context.ATP is a welcome slight on the rock star myth. Instead we see true folks connecting with true emotions and expressing it through true music, and the audience who now heard that expression and the result it had on them.There's more melody around us than ever, it's on all the time, but how many of us now listen.That told there is some spectacular live footage and some stunning sound, but more than that Jonathan Caouette has edited the miles of footage into a message, a thought provoking and relevant message, and that is why this movie succeeds above the just other rock concert film option, which would have been quite entertaining in itself.

It's notably also shot by Vincent Moon, who's done a lot of Take Away Shows, where he's filmed quasi-famous bands performing their songs (mostly acoustic sets) on the streets.600 hours of footage that was compiled from fanatics was edited by Nickname Fenton and comprises this collage from 200 contributors. It's surprisingly coherent.After-show delights from fanatics (including a woman trying to climb a cottage and failing) and artists (who are fans, of course), folks arriving to the resort, history, gigs, snippets of Patti Smith, Sun Ra, Iggy Pop and others from various eras explaining how they feel about melody are included, as well as the zone in itself. It's a magical zone that makes Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" feel like a commercial trick. The people. The people! The after-shows, the gigs outside people's chalets, the cheap, terrible wine from the store in the center of it all, Lightning Bolt blowing a speaker, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs walking around everywhere, Daniel Johnston sitting in a garden with loads of folks hearing him sing and enjoy an acoustic guitar, the sun shining in as the bloody seagulls squawk you awake and as you wake up you push the curtains – with the ugliest print you've ever seen – away from the window to see folks returning home from a late late night that never really ends. Not until you leave. But the zone sticks, and it's been a part of my heart ever since and it'll never leave, because it's just that beautiful. It's the wind moaning in your ears as you realise it's not the wind, it's the fact that you've just left a tiny chalet where Scott sits with a laser device, folks from The National walk along and you hear bands in the background. Bands? What bands? You don't care, because it's all like one large party where nobody's headlining. It's just music, to paraphrase a guy – who looked a lot like Jerry Garcia – in the documentary. From other time, other age.I suddenly feel like Hunter S. Thompson at the end of the movie "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas", where he talks and writes of the American election and how it becomes America. The documentary is a part of the experience as much as a piece of the puzzle, and to me it's the bottle that tells "drink me". Drink it! And then go to Minehead. You will be a better person for it. Believe me. There is no ego in this. There are no competitions. There's bingo in the early mornings, territories to hang out with mates you don't know yet and the greatest feeling I've ever experienced with them, like you're all weirdly connected through more than music. I love it.
For a movie almost entirely composed of amateur footage, sent in by fans, this is certainly one of the greatest looking, greatest sounding rock documentaries I've seen for a very long time.This woman Krissie Nicolson summed it up cute well: "We receive performances from the festival goers and artists on film, camcorder, Super 8 and android phones. Some of it is hilarious, some of it's inspiring - and all of it is entertaining in some way. I think this movie instructional. It could be shown at schools as part of the national curriculum to excite gratis and independent thinking. After all, this country needs the agitators more actually than ever."
