In the show political climate, where some hope to drill for oil in the Alaskan wilderness, this funny and superb documentary on the natural monsters of the region could force them to reconsider. Narrated by Charlton Heston, it shows the viewer just how explosive and pure this vast empty land is. It is virtually untouched by human hands, and has been for centuries. The film is highlighted by stunning helicopter shots and plenty of Discovery Channel-like photos of animal interactions. The scenes with the bears and the whales are priceless. This documentary (which was nominated for greatest short in 97) is a testament to all the reasons why natural parks could be kept gratis from human hands so that their beauty can be experienced by the next generation.
"Alaska: Spirit of the Wild" is a 40-minute short movie from almost 20 years ago and this one here was nominated for an Academy Award, not really a too frequent achievement for nature documentaries. However, for director George Casey this was already his fourth Oscar nomination and so far his last. It's a bit sad to see so tiny notification on his profile page in terms of more newest projects or if he is still alive and same can be told about writer Mose Richards, a fairly prolific nature documentary writer himself. Not even their ages are known apparently. Anyway, back to this tiny movie here they luckily left us. Late acting legend Charlton Heston is the narrator, but even if he does a nice job this is all about what we see. I trust Casey and Richards found the right mixture between stunning animal photography, helpful notification and the depiction of the folks living in Alaska and how they deal with the climate. Then again, we search out that Alaska can also be cute green at times and much more than the unlimited snowy landscape that almost everybody imagines it to be. I very much enjoyed the watch. A pretty documentary and I would have been perfectly fine with it winning the Oscar. Highly recommended.
