Themes: the DP says folks where to look; changes in films (the comeback of sound, color, and wide screens) needed constructive responses from DPs; and, these artisans constantly invent fresh equipment and test fresh things, with unbelievable results. The narration takes us through the identifiable studio styles of the 30s, the emergence of noir, the Fresh York look, and the impact of Europeans. Description: This Divided State follows the controversy surrounding Utah Valley State College's invitation to liberal filmmaker Michael Moore to speak on campus. Though UVSC is located in one of the most conservative counties in the United States, vehement opposition to Moore's visit was much greater than anticipated. Equally surprising, however, was the overwhelming help for Moore, vocalized by students and community members previously considered "apathetic." Debate between Moore supporters and Moore protestors raged openly in the media and public forums. Death threats, hate mail, bribes, and lawsuits were all candidly captured on film.

Shoah #

Description: Claude Lanzmann directed this 9 1/2 hour documentary of the Holocaust without using a single frame of archive footage. He interviews survivors, witnesses, and ex-Nazis (whom he had to movie secretly since they only accepted to be interviewed by audio). His style of interviewing by asking for the most minute features is effective at adding up these features to give a horrifying portrait of the happenings of Nazi genocide. He also shows, or rather lets some of his topics themselves show, that the anti-Semitism that caused 6 million Jews to die in the Holocaust is still alive in well in many folks that still live in Germany, Poland, and elsewhere.

He and Wenders discuss this idea, but it is obviously unrealistic given Ray's state of health.
