Follow the bouncing ball and sing the game song. The animation is really below the usual Fleischer standards. We mostly see mice marching around, as well as a several another animals. I suppose the audiences liked the singing of famous songs, but I never had much attraction for this motif.
A Hot Time in the Old City Tonight (1930) ** 1/2 (out of 4)The Fleischer Studio produced a number of these animated short movies where the "bouncing ball" would have audience members singing together. This short begins off with a tree getting tired of the hot sun so he puts it out and replaces it with the moon. Forward over to a singing mouse who I'm sure Walt Disney didn't approve of. If you're familiar with the series then you'll already know that the animated beginnings were just a method to receive us to the song in question. The animation here was quite good, the mouse hero was in few of these and he was entertaining for the most part. The song too was nice for what it was so if you're a fanatic of the series then you could play this.
This is basically all there is to this slightly-over-6 minute short movie from 85 years ago. It's still in black and white and the director is Dave Fleischer one of the most prolific boys in film history going solely by the numbers. The game of this short movie is also the game of the (slightly catchy) song that is sung all the time. There is no true storyline to this short time or any really funny scenes or any dramatic tension, it's just basically melody with animated characters testing the instruments. All the mice look a bit like Mickey, but that's only coincidence as the world's most popular mouse is obviously by Disney and not by Fleischer. Decent watch for folks who love very old cartoons, but everybody else can give this one a pass.
