Mary Pickford was originally Gladys Louise Smith from Toronto, Ontario. Americans didn't care and we've everytime welcomed our Canuckistani neighbors since we've settled that pesky matter over the 49th Parallel. Miss Pickford, Charley Chaplin (from England, naturally) and Douglas Fairbanks (he, at least, was born here) toured the country, raising cash for the First Globe World, aka the 4th Liberty Bond. They also produced short subjects, exhorting film audiences to purchase bonds. This is Mary's.It's a easy storyline of a young girl, out at an amusement park, exhorted to purchase bonds. So she practices a several economies, like forgoing an ice cream soda and walking home instead of taking the trolley, and in less than a minute of screen time, she has her own bond in hand.Miss Pickford is adorable and silly and compassionate and sad..... all the emotions and a couple of great gags. There's tiny in this movie, but it's fun to see America's Sweetheart mugging it up. Even if she was from other country, we Americans like a taste of the exotic.
100 PERCENT American isn't a "real" film - it's a fight bond drive short said in dramatic form so don't expect it to be as entertaining as a bona fide Mary Pickford movie. It IS however quite charming and one of the greatest done movies of this nature, even up vs soon "talkie" examples. Mary Pickford stars as a tiny city woman who while originally flippant upon hearing of the necessities of saving cash and investing in fight bonds, nevertheless denies herself luxuries like fresh dresses, ice cream sundaes, and even trolley tickets to save for fight bonds. Her friend, however isn't quite so self-sacrificing.There is quite a bit of light humor in this effective tiny piece of patriotism and it's largest asset is Mary Pickford at perhaps the most pretty I have ever seen her. Mary plays a young girl her own age, twenty-something, and she is absolutely a vision in lovely clothes, especially her first stage in a fetching outfit finished with cap. And I love one of the opening screen boards reading "Americans are extremists...what we earn in six days, we spend in two hours" suggesting at least some things never change even after almost 100 years.
This movie is part of a DVD set entitled "Treasures III"--a set of four DVDs all about social problems and reform. The fourth disk (where you'll search this one) is about ethnic problems in particular.Perhaps several at the time saw any irony in the film's title, but calling the movie "100% American" and having it star Canadian, Mary Pickford, seems rather funny. Many saw her as the ideal American but she was Canadian born and raised. No matter, she was "America's Sweetheart"--the #1 box office draw of the era.The movie is a propaganda piece that is trying to illustrate the importance of self-sacrifice in order to aid the fight effort. At first in the film, Mary is frivolous and thinks nothing of wasting her money. However, at a bond rally she learns how necessary it is to economize and create sacrifice. The rest of the movie is a preachy illustration of all the methods she can support the boy overseas. In fact, by refusing to purchase a soda, she is supporting slay off the dreaded Hun!!While all of this is cute obvious, it's reasonably well done and has a pretty segment about Mary losing her bond cash as well as a weird final stage with Mary and the Kaiser! It's not the only pro-war effort movie Ms. Pickford made (I've seen a couple others) and is clearly not intended as her finest moment on the screen but an overt push to receive Americans to invest in bonds. It's successful in this sense but also far less satisfying than the typical feature-length movie of the late 1910s or 1920s.
