Ibogaine, derived from the root of a central African plant named Iboga, had been used for centuries by the Bwiti folks of Gabon & Cameroon, as part of a tribal initiation ceremony. A psychedelic with dissociative properties, the substance is banned in some countries; in another countries it is used by proponents of psychedelic therapy to treat addiction to methadone, heroin, alcohol, cocaine, methamphetamine, anabolic steroids, & another drugs. Iboga Nights tackles some very necessary problems regarding heroin addiction. This movie deserves the attention of each member of Public Health! Flawless Filmmaking by a nice Documentarian.
I saw a preview of this movie recently and am glad I did. Following on from his very private documentary 'Detox or Die', David Graham Scott's 'Iboga Nights' is a gotta see intimate portrait and emotional journey. of those trying to change their lives by using Ibogaine, the potential 'magic bullet' that should cure their addiction. As a viewer, I found myself rooting for all the characters in the movie and hoping every would search a method out. I'm not going to tell if they did or did not but this movie raises the question of could we be doing more as a society and could we test fresh methods of treatment. Anyone involved in drug treatment and indeed those who are not, could watch this film.
I felt moved to tears as the credits rolled, it's a very sensitive, balanced and inspirational piece of heartfelt gonzo movie making.I seem to recall that Kieślowski's A Short Movie about Killing had the result of having the death penalty abolished in Poland. Truly nice movie really can be so much more than entertainment, it can bring about humanitarian change and in that sense Iboga Nights is a really necessary work.David Graham Scott's approach is unusually non invasive and sensitive, but this is clearly because he is part of the storyline rather than a voyeur. This movie has no agenda, it's not damning drug test nor is it ramming a fresh magic bullet down our throats. It's simply asking the question, does Iboga support people? It should so easy have gone for the grime and filth of a junkie's existence but instead it shows dignity within the desperation, the folks beyond the habit. I watch a lot of documentary movie but it's rare that I explore work of such unmanipulative caliber, I really hope this movie gets the attention it so richly deserves, it's clearly a labor of love
