This makeover of "Idiots DeLuxe"(1945) that had Curly this time is redone with Joe Besser. There were a several nice scenes, like the gunfight scenes, but that was it. The ending is one of the weakest in a stooge short ever. You gotta see it to trust how low it was. The another scenes are either old footage or rehashed scenes that were originally in "Idiots DeLuxe" with Joe Besser. These scenes were also redone quite poorly. Overall a very low effort.Grade: D
Actually come on, Joe Besser was not a hideously terrible stooge. Joe Besser had potential to be the third stooge, but he just did things his own way. He may not have the child-like, and charming vigor like Curly did, or have the charismatic wise-guy attitude like Shemp. Joe Besser should never keep a candle to Curly and Shemp, but he was still a cute decent stooge even if he did act childish and touchy. This one is a makeover of the Curly episode, "Idiots Deluxe". The plot is almost the same, but has a bit of a western theme. Moe has a nervous breakdown after learning he's on the verge of bankruptcy and Larry and Joe recommend he take a trip to the woods with them. The funniest part was when Larry and Joe were making Moe's dinner and Larry shouts, "Spaghetti's ready" and screams because he saw a bear. Plus the part where Moe poured salt all over Joe's tongue. Also the stage about the sheriff getting a bandit was rather amusing, too. As a matter of fact, Guns A Poppin' is my favourite Joe Besser episode. I now like some episodes with Joe, and so does my brother and some another Stooge fanatics I know as well. Joe Besser may not have been the funniest stooge, but some of the episodes with him do deserve to be seen. The reason why Moe continued with the act is because Larry was a compulsive gambler who used to spend it like crazy, and they had to eat and pay their bills didn't they? In conclusion, feel gratis to check out Guns A Poppin'. Whether you like Joe Besser or hate him.
"Guns A Popping!" is unfortunately not one of the better Three Stooges shorts with Joe Besser as the third Stooge. It is a remake, with a nice deal of stock footage, of other fairly low Stooge short titled "Idiots DeLuxe" (1945), which details Curly Howard as the third Stooge. One might think that Joe simply played Curly's part from the original, but this was not the case; it was now Larry who took Curly's original part, thus leaving Joe to take Larry's original part. As for the plot, just like in the original, Larry and Joe take Moe to court on charges of assault and battery. This all effects from the well-meaning Larry and Joe taking Moe on a quiet camping trip to soothe his frazzled nerves. But now, there's a fresh subplot: The notorious bandit Angry Bill Hookup (Joe Palma) invades the Stooges' cabin as he is being pursued by the sheriff (Frank Sully), thus Moe can easy count on his camping trip NOT being very quiet! Highlights from "Guns A Popping!" contain the following. Moe just can't seem to receive any peace and quiet with the presence of the noisy Original Two-Man Quartet (Larry and Joe clowning with different instruments played simultaneously). At the boys' cabin, a rather pretty and harmless bear steals Moe's food; the funniest stage in the entire short is Larry's reaction when he spots the bear while cooking Moe's spaghetti. When Larry and Joe soon spot what they think is the bear in their cabin, Larry accidentally shoots Moe (hiding underneath a fur overcoat) in the posterior; Moe's expression of pain never sounded better! As enjoyable as all of this sounds, "Guns A Popping!" simply does not measure up to being a nice Three Stooges short despite the boundless energy of Moe, Larry, and Joe. The gag of Moe repeatedly getting squashed by the cabin door becomes somewhat protracted, and the very ending of this short is disappointingly weak. At the end of "Idiots DeLuxe," Moe chases Larry and Curly out of the courtroom with his axe; in this remake, Moe simply gives Larry one whack on the head with the axe and then dramatically complains about his nerves as he walks toward the camera.
