Low-budget impresario Kanti Shah takes on the all-time classic of Indian cinema in DUPLICATE SHOLAY, a low-budget rehash so proudly derivate it flirts with post-modernism. The plot, as expected, is largely cribbed from the source, India's still-reigning cultural touchstone. What I failed to note going in was the precise nebulous wording of Shah's title. It's not COMEDY SHOLAY (another movie entirely), nor is it PARODY SHOLAY (to my knowledge still available), but DUPLICATE SHOLAY, a term which - correctly - implies no change whatsoever.Unfortunately, duplication is largely be Shah's MO, and if the game refers to anything broader, it's what appears to be the strange Indian cinematic practice of actor "duplicates" - essentially celebrity impersonators who build careers around their near-perfect resemblance to idols. Here we receive Duplicates Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan (as the original's Veeru and Jai), along with Duplicate Sunny Deol as Tara Singh (a hero imported from GADAR: EK PREM KATHA) and probably few others (I was in method over my head regarding cultural references). For Western audiences, this would be akin to mashing up STAR WARS and JAWS in terms of cultural significance, or perhaps STAR WARS and THE MATRIX, given the time jump (GADAR, produced in 2001, was also a SHOLAY-sized hit). The plot largely adheres to the source, though it's been sliced, diced, and reconfigured with tiny rhyme or reason. Shah makes one of the original bandit henchmen into a "eunuch" (essentially portrayed as a transgender or transvestite character) for some reason, and also throws in a raped female dacoit (Sapna) seeking revenge. References to GADAR and probably few another films are tossed in as well, but the SHOLAY highlights take center stage: there's the opening train robbery (staged as a particularly shoddy attack on a jeep), the talking statue scene, the water turret suicide attempt, the bandits' raid on the village, etc. For the most part, nothing is changed - characters simply wander on-camera and loudly announce "Something very related to this happened in the 1975 hit movie SHOLAY," then are usually corrected by other hero assuring them that things don't have to be that way, since "this is the 2002 movie DUPLICATE SHOLAY." Nevertheless, they largely are.The only true moments of inspiration are found during the film's rare deviations from its source. The largest laugh, for example, comes during the popular reveal at the end of SHOLAY's first part (SPOILER FOR THE ORIGINAL), where mysterious ex-police officer Thakur Singh, after failing to pick up a rifle and support the heroes in a fight, tosses off his late-period-Brando shawl to reveal an armless torso, the byproduct of an earlier encounter with the villain. Here, when our duplicate heroes call him on his cowardice, one stops to wonder whether he might not be armless as well, given that his counterpart was in SHOLAY. "No," Thakur avers, tossing off the shawl to reveal two perfectly nice arms, "but I'm blind." It's a hilarious, fully unexpected twist on one of the original film's signature moments, and it shines like a beacon of hope in a movie otherwise content to march as lazily through recreations of its source material as a Freidberg-Seltzer parody. (END SPOILERS)While the movie Is nowhere near as terrible as those cinematic abominations, Shah, a director of special lunatic creativity, is certainly capable of far better. My hope is that I'm simply missing a huge number of references - that there's some lvl of metatext evading me which renders the whole exercise more than just an exhaustingly laborious recapitulation. There are glimmers of creativity in here somewhere - the random addition of the female dacoit, the bewildering staccato gunfights that enjoy like structuralist parodies of themselves - but they're largely lost amongst all the pro forma recreations and empty posturing. While it may be a nice 60 mins shorter than its inspiration, DUPLICATE SHOLAY is, unfortunately, the movie that feels three hours long.
