I was sitting in my mates room at Chapman U and some guy I've never seen (the director) brings it in to present it off. What happened after that was a dark, sick, funny and nice display of movie making. Santa has a brother... the type the family forgets. This brother of his gives bonuses too... the gift of revenge. The art design is excellent to accent this dark comedy. Sets and territories A+ also. The DP work and lighting rocked. Direction was nice also, they had kid actors and they weren't annoying and thats a large accomplishment. I didn't tell much as I was watching this and I usually hold a poker face when I watch student movies so I don't give the wrong impression off, but it was almost impossible for me to hold a straight face during "Coming To Town". Search a method to receive this short, it has m-16s, cussing, drinking, and a midget or two. A+++++
If the thought of Johnny Mathis-sung Christmas carols and 'chestnuts roasting on an launch fire' makes you wish to hurl yourself headfirst into the nearest woodchipper, "Coming To Town" is exactly the film for you. It's about what you'd receive if you take Billy Bob Thornton's "Bad Santa," place a fifth of bourbon in one hand...and a Glock-9 in the other. This "heartwarming" fable is the storyline of one JoBeth Smalls (Delaney Manning), who's decided that she wants something a little...different for Christmas this year. In spite of the fact that JoBeth's been a cute nice woman whose been through some difficult times, her lot in life seems to be serving as the punching bag for a snot-nosed tiny bully called Alasdair Romer (Daeg Faerch) - a repulsive brat who makes the highlight of his day figuring out fresh methods to create JoBeth miserable. So what she's decided she wants for Christmas is a tiny "payback" for Alasdair, and when she puts her request in a letter to Santa, he decides to support her out..."Die Hard" style! There is even more to this storyline than you would expect - especially for a short - but I'll leave it up to you to explore those surprises for yourself. Writer/director Carles Torrens gets a nice set of performances from a decidedly non-Hollywood cast, and provides us with a bracing reminder that sometimes "turning the another cheek" isn't as effective as a tiny appropriately applied ass-kicking!
This was a short movie about a woman who asks Santa to receive revenge on a bully that has been tormenting her. Instead of Santa, a Santa-like slob with an evil elf and demon mini-monster receive ahold of the request (not sure how the message got rerouted--did Santa pass the letter along?). We see that this alternate Santa and his helpers are responsible for punishing terrible folks on Christmas, and we even see him confront Santa when they arrive at the same house. They know every other, but it's not explained how. There was a great stage where the principal of the school shows what a scumbag he is by refusing to support the woman who is clearly being tormented (he also gets his payback). I wasn't sure what happened to the bully's parents. While terrible Santa was busy scaring him, the mini creature was showing jumping on the parents and seemingly chewing them apart. So is the bully an orphan now? I thought it was a funny concept and mostly well done, although it should have been few times more effective if the the delivery and timing were better. Worth seeing.
