The two greatest things you can tell about this film is that it is original and also cute well acted for an indie horror. I usually can't sit through films with practically zero budget and unknown actors. I was into this though the entire way. The reason was as I mentioned above is that the zombies were various and the acting held up.There were two cute pretty women in it and also a really funny pair of "nerdy" guys who worked well together and made me laugh a several times. It's a cute fun film and you could check it out if you can. I would like to see what the director should do with some money at his disposal to create the results and makeup better.
Initially, I would tell that with a corny game as "Attack of the Vegan Zombies!" then this film most likely is going to be one of those stinkers that you know you could just stay well clear of. Still, I decided to sit down and watch it, it is still a zombie film after all, right? Right? And actually having seen it, one word comes to mind: seriously? Plants awakened by witchcraft gone awry, and actually out to injure and kill. For real? And such plants can apparently turn folks into zombies or something zombie-like.There was a lot of pointless footage with suspense melody added for impact. But it just didn't work out in favor of the movie. All it did was add to the campy and cheesy feeling of the movie.Granted, this is a weak budget movie, but I will tell that the cast were now surprisingly nice for most parts. And while not being academy award winning performances, folks were still doing better jobs than anticipated for such a movie. The effort to create a film was nice and well-intended. The storyline, though, not so much and was weighing down the film rather than supporting it along.Sound-wise, then I gotta tell that I have no clue as to what they were thinking here. Most of the film was shrouded in over-dramatic sound results that didn't work in favor of the film at all.As for the results and make-up, well, let's just tell it was as weak budget as the rest of the movie. If you play zombie movies, your time, cash and effort is better placed elsewhere.
I'm going to begin out here telling that this is a low-budget movie, and if you wish the dazzling unique results or the nice gore results of a Romero movie, you will be highly disappointed. If, however, you are more like me, you might come to appreciate the film as one that is campy, light-hearted twist on the zombie film that manages to rise above the muck that is typically low-budget fodder.First, the acting is now decent. Not awarding-winning by any means, but decent in that it can pass as plausible. The lead couple (played by Jim Townsend and Christine Egan) and do a tremendous job keeping a sense of sincerity in their roles. They are very "normal" folks you should meet at the grocery store, and their sincerity adds to their likability. This is one film in which you now like the lead characters. Further into the movie, we're introduced to a couple of nerdy students and a couple of cheerleaders. The nerds are a bit over the top, but they definitely add some comedy and light-heartedness to the movie, reminding us that the film doesn't take itself too seriously. The cheerleaders do add sex appeal (there is a very brief topless lesbian stage - nothing beyond a PG-13 rating), but it is refreshing that the actresses are pretty as well as "normal." Again, the cheerleaders are like a couple of women you'd meet at the mall, not sultry models who have nothing in common with the rest of the average world. These young girls are pretty in a normal sense.Basically, the plot involves a winery being the website of a zombie attack, zombies who thirst for wine and not flesh. I will not give away any specific features about the plot (you will have to see the film yourself to see how it ends!), but I will tell that I found the film an enjoyable viewing because of its slightly various take on zombies.I give the film 8 out of 10 stars. If you do not play campy low-budget movies, you will probably think I'm being too generous. But I write these reviews with the overall fun factor in mind - how satisfied I was with the viewing experience. The film is an original piece, the zone is memorable, the characters are likable, and the film is nicely paced with appropriate moments of drama, humor, and camp. The film is not without gore, but it is limited to cute much what you can search in make-up kit you'd purchase at the Halloween Store. The violence is also minimal and often implied. Again, there is a brief topless stage by both of the cheerleaders, but surprisingly it works well within the context of the storyline as well as remind us that the film is campy and light. I am looking forward to seeing what Mr. Townsend will come up with next!
